Stop Foreign Nurses

Published

Foreign Nurses coming to work in our Health Care facilities are the most serious threat to our professional security. They threaten our earning potential as well as are pushing us out of the Long Term Care environment. Kindred Healthcare is one of the biggest offenders. What are your views on this most serious matter now facing our profession.

did this happen to you? i'm trying to understand where you are coming from.

No but it can happen to you or me.

Foreign Nurses are wonderful people and they are great contributors yes, but they are needed in their own countries or origin for their is a worldwide shortage of nurses.

There are many reasons why nurses from other countries come to the U.S. Perhaps, their jobs in their countries don't pay as much. Perhaps they feel they will make a better life for themselves if they come to our country. Perhaps there is no shortage of nurses in their country and it's hard for them to find a job. Whatever the reason, the comment about foreign nurses needing to go back to their own country is quite uncalled for.

This is just gonna start a nasty discussion. Foreign nurses have to get certified to work here. I don't see the big deal. The foreign nurses I have worked with picked up many shifts that would have not been filled leaving the unit short.

The problem with the nursing shortage is NOT foreign nurses, its the lack of nursing educators and nurses that have left the bedside. And they are certainly not "taking over" and "pushing" anyone from their job.

It is well known that some countries with corrupt institutions and governments have diploma mills. Documentation is provided and a fee is paid and training is provided to pass exams. Do some research on-line and elsewhere.

Which countries have diploma mills? Are you accusing countries of passing out nursing degrees and diplomas without actually educating their nurses? Which foreign nurses do you have a problem with? Is it just foreign nurses in general or from a specific country?

They are HB-1 Visa holders, Guest workers with no legal right to stay here and with a contract from their Employer. They have no legal right to stay here permanently and is based on their contract, ie a defacto indentured servant.

I don't know what your situation is but it sounds to be like your issue is with Kindred and not with foreign nurses. There are a lot of foreign nurses that are wonderful nurses and PEOPLE. I find it very insensitive for you to make a statement like that on this board, especially as this is highly utilized by international nurses and many of them are great contributers.

I have more of a middle-ground opinion about this. To the foreign-born nurses who choose to come here, immigrate and work, I say, bravo and good luck! Many people immigrate from other countries in search of a better life and to fill jobs.

On the other hand, the deliberate importing of foreign nurses by greasing the skids in the immigration process in an attempt to drive down nursing salaries not only is unethical to American nurses, but is unethical to the countries where the nurses are being imported from, creating a more dire nursing shortage in developing countries.

The only issue I have seen with some foreign nurses has been cultural differences. By White, Hispanic, and even most Asian standard most of the African (from africa) nurses I have worked with seem to be almost frigid emotionally as though their homeland is so tough not much evokes pity or sentiment for even the worst off patients. I even heard one tell a grieving family member "she dead now why you crying". I guess it just strikes me as odd because no matter what culture or belief they come from I try to adapt and care for them without inserting my personal views (dying with dignity etc.) Also I have seen many of them perform resident care that was questionable at best in terms of safety (lotsa shortcuts). Again this has just been my observations not necessarily a reason to stop hiring them but I think everyone should be held to a standard of care not just a warm body who agrees to overtime for the money.

Telling someone to to do some research is the easy way out. Why not explain your views. I'm well aware that there are agencies that contract foreign workers to come here and work, i.e. the nurses in NJ who were charged with abandoning their patients. I do not agree with it, but I don't agree with you blaming all foreign nurses. If you can back up your stance with some resources or research you have done, perhaps I'd be more inclined believe you.

by foreign nurses coming here and taking over NURSING...willing to work for smaller wages....THAT is what brings out salaries down..and prevents AMERICAN students from pursuing Nursing(being underpaid..for the amount of work you have to do!) SORRY to all the foreign nurses.!!!!!!!!! Everyone has an opinion!

No. You don't come into our forum making absurd and frankly xenophobic claims and then dodge questions when people ask you to back your claims up.

That's intellectual laziness of the lowest level.
