Stool transplant???

We had a rep from our ID department come to a unit staff meeting to talk about infection control and she told us about a patient on another unit who was treated with antibiotics for C Diff for months unsucessfully. Finally they tried a "stool transplant," where a family member 'donated' a stool sample to transplant into the C Diff patient's lower GI tract to help restore the normal flora. Can you imagine? I never heard of such a thing :eek:

This is funny - I didn't think it was possible to gross out nurses! I've tried to think of the "ethical" considerations that one poster questioned. I can't think of anything unethical about this, maybe I'm just obtuse. :p

Well, this is kinda yucko, but heck so is the idea of injecting horse urine into people for "weight loss". Also, if it works then go for it. Now there is no ethical problem in my opinion, just "idea" is revolting. They do blood transfusions so why not poop transfusions? :wink2:

What do they say to the donor? "Take a dump in this jar and bring it back in the morning?" That's not something I would want to carry around in my pocketbook :rotfl:

We had a patient in our SDU w/C diff and the doctors were thinking about doing this procedure on her. Said it would replace the normal flora and bacteria needed for digestion. Not sure if this would have worked, pt died before procedure was done. I cannot imagine how they would have collected the stool needed or instilled it into the receiving patient. Sounds like a shi**y deal to me. LOL :rotfl:

I didn't think it was possible to gross me out, but you guys did it. That is the grossest thing I have ever heard. I love my family but there is not one of them that I want to share poo with!!! :eek:
