Stool transplant???

Published

We had a rep from our ID department come to a unit staff meeting to talk about infection control and she told us about a patient on another unit who was treated with antibiotics for C Diff for months unsucessfully. Finally they tried a "stool transplant," where a family member 'donated' a stool sample to transplant into the C Diff patient's lower GI tract to help restore the normal flora. Can you imagine? I never heard of such a thing

EEEEWWWW, gross!!! I sure hope that's not true!

At first I thought it was a joke, but it's true  I wonder if they used a turkey baster? :chuckle

do you know what the response was to the treatment? successful or not. quite an interesting solution if it works but what about the ethics of this procedure.

Yes, I have heard of this treatment being used, and apparently, it is rather effective! It repopulates the bowels with normal flora.. so in theory, if you think about it, it seems quite logical.

I have heard of it being done, but rarily.

I do not know how effective that it is, but generally done as a option of last resort.

Check under the GI boards... I asked about this a while ago, since they were thinking about this for one of my LTC residents... sounds gross, but it might work..

I'm sorry, but that's just about the grossest thing I've ever heard! YUKK!!! :rotfl: Why can't the pt. just take some acidophilis?

what??????????????????????????????????

We did it in our unit......

You take the poo of a relative, and it's tested for transmittable diseases.... and then you pretty much just stir it up with some milk or water until it's like a creamy consistency.....

Then, we used..... like an enema bag to 'implant' the poo......

It cured the C-Diff.....

It's absolutely disgusting, and I think everyone was green and about to vomit afterward....
