Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the Stony Brook accelerated (1 year) program and here to help with questions you might have. It was useful for me to look at the thread from last year when I was applying so I wanted to get one started for all of you. Feel free to post questions or message me. I hope this is helpful.

someone answered my question yesterday saying it will take 8 weeks to give the people that have already interviewed a decision...I feel like they can't be done with interviews just yet if that's the case right? Why would they need that much time?

Emslife... they r conducting background checks in every person that is being considered.

Nicxol... usually the waitlisters find out the same time as the acceptance letters go out

Oh wow, I did not realize that..I see why it might take a while now lol. So do you think they're no longer offering interviews?

Hello all happy thanksgiving to all the applicants.

I wanted to touch base once more with you guys with some updated information in regards to the program. This year there was 685 applicants. As many of you are aware there are only 80 seats total in the program. They usually do about 175 applicants but this year for interviews they did about 150 people. To officially answer your questions, yes you absolutely must have an interview to get into the program. After the interview you will start a writing test on the computer where you will write a short story about 200-300 words. After you will be given a paper math test testing basic arithmetic I believe they give you 25 minutes if i remember correctly for each test. I'm not sure if interviews are over but I was offered when I got my interview scheduling link only about 10 options fro different days and times. I got the link around 3 weeks after the application deadline.

First interviews when our around 1.5-2 weeks after the app deadline as they do every year. I saw interviews up till november 7th and I'm pretty sure interviews are only about 3 weeks maybe 4. decisions go out the first week or two in December specifically so you have a bit of time to apply to the two year program as well. Don't discount the two year its still very challenging they average about 15 credits a semester and I hear them talk about how hard it is. the ABP is about 21-24 credits a semester you get a week or so after the summer into the fall get most of January off and finish the final semester in may.

As for the application what they really look for in your application is your personal statement. something that is going to make you stick out and really give a personal story that means something to you. something thats going to show this drive that you must be in the field of nursing. GPA is important but science GPA is very important so i hope you did great in your sciences i got 2 As and a B+ in chemistry still have to take the other anatomy and physiology course at suffolk since virtual labs aren't accepted by the school of nursing and the first time i took it, it was at stony brook university who only offered virtual lab for A&P, I also got an A in that but its like I didn't take it according the application coordinator (karen allard) at stony brook. As for my overall GPA its a 3.3.

You can easily still apply to SUNY downstate 15 month program its 15 credits a semester like the two year program at stony brook. They require the TEAS V, the app deadline is November 30th and you can take the TEAS up till the 31st of december if you have not taken it by NOV. 30th. They have a similar application to stony brook but they only wants 300-500 words for the personal statement I believe. SUNY farmingdale is 3 years long no matter what, they also require TEAS V.

in any case, please if you have any questions for me I'm sure that I can answer it for you. I hope you and your families are having a happy thanksgiving

Best wishes for you all,

Thank you so much for your helpful insight and advice! Can I ask where you got the statistics for interviews and everything from? Just curious!

I've made my face known in the department learned the ins and outs of the program what they look for how many applicants they get each year how many interviews they offer on average along with he information provided to me at the interview in regards to the amount of credits each semester is and what they offered in regards to spots for interviews this year directly from the interviewers. its all solid sources....as for if they're still doing interviews that I couldn't tell you ATM but I can try to find out. I know people who are willing to share that with me if they know. I'll keep in touch if you'd like

Thank you so much, it is always great to make a good impression and get to know the people in charge for sure! I'm just trying to gauge what my plan will be next year and SBU is definitely my number one! Like many others, I'm wondering why I haven't heard anything at all and any insight in the admission process is always helpful. I'm wondering if the fact that I haven't been rejected is a good thing, wouldn't they have said no already if they weren't interested in my application? or maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up...

if you could keep in touch, i would be incredibly grateful! :)

The rejection letters go out at the same time as acceptance... that's how's it been in the past years. They keep their options open till then

Hey just wanted to touch base with you once more. I'd like to make it clear that I am in no way associated with the school of nursing nor do i represent them in anyway. (they told me to say that lol) I was told that whether or not interviews are still going on is "confidential" however I would also like to make a personal note that the moment they started interviews there were chairs for the interviewees to sit on over by the interview coordinators desk (jan) today when i went in to ask though she did not say it was something that was very significantly noticed. In a personal assessment I don't believe that they are doing interviews anymore however if someone gets one please let me know because I'm curious myself and would be shocked if they are because they are very particular about how they conduct themselves (thats why the missing chairs is significant). Jan said between mid december and January the emails would be going out. however during the interview I was told they I will get an email the first week or two of December to give you just enough time to apply to the BBP (basic baccalaureate program). I'm sure they are going to wait to the last minute to be sure of their decisions.

One of the main reasons these programs are so competitive is because once you're admitted to the program you're now a liability for the reputability of the program...meaning if you drop out because you couldn't handle 21-25 credits a semester that makes them look bad for retention rates and pass rates on the NCLEX. Maintaining over a 90% on the first attempt every year is a top priority for the program because the mission statement states they strive to provide an ivy league education at a fraction of the cost. This is where their admissions committee sits, they want Creativity, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent that will show them you can and WILL do it. your GPA needs to show you can handle school work and do well. to give some scope I've provided an outline of GPA

A = 4.0

A- = 3.67

B+ = 3.33

B = 3.0

B- = 2.67

ect...

The minimum overall GPA to apply is a 2.8 so you need to have a high B- average minimum even just to apply. I hope this helps you guys. AND MAKE SURE YOU APPLY TO THE TWO YEAR AS WELL!!!!

Best of luck to you all,

KC

Two more weeks to wait. This is painful

Hey guys, just wanted to wish everyone luck on their interviews, I am part of the class of 2017 and I organized a bunch of social events before we started school. I am hosting an end of the semester party in the city on December 16th. Hopefully you guys will have you acceptances by then. You are welcomed to come to the event and meet some of the students of the program. I can also guide whoever decides to take that role of creating a facebook group and such.

Has anyone heard anything yet?
