Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015

Published

It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

DLH1086 I did about a month ago I emailed them telling them the message in admissions decisions tab said I already accepted or denied all available decisions and they said that decisions have not gone out yet

Has anyone who interviewed in November been accepted?

GoVeg.. when was your orientation? I know ours won't be the same exact date but I was just curious when they usually have orientation and when the first day of classes start.

anyone hear anything today?

They will tell you that it needs to be submitted by then but I have a secret for you: no one keeps track...I know it sounds risky but if I were you, I wouldn't say anything. Once your at orientation, they really want to keep you and will work really hard with you to work through the documentation. But if you tell them before then, who knows.

:nailbiting: oh man, this is crazy! I'm also among the concerned because I don't think my last final (taking Micro in the spring) will be until 5/20 or so, and knowing CUNY, ain't no way a transcript is getting anywhere by 5/23. I guess I'll attempt to stop worrying about that! ha!

i dont want to seem annoying but if anyone who is accepted and seeking off campus housing, please let me know!! i am from the city and would love to save money living off campus lol :) i lived on campus before and it gets expensive in West

I have been debating about either commuting from Brooklyn or finding off campus housing. I feel like commuting will be a pain because it's kind of far especially by train but also at the same time I know rent in LI could be pricey! I don't know what to do but I have to figure something out soon..

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

This is not a big deal. Plenty of my classmates finished prereqs in May and just handed transcripts in at orientation. What's important is that they are done by the time you start the program. Worries POOF gone :D

Keep in mind that attending school here by train is not like going to NYU. The LIRR train schedule to and from Stony Brook is not very friendly, meaning that the trains that you have to take to get to certain classes may not coincide as you would like (ie, getting to campus an hour before lecture, after commuting for a couple of hours). Also more importantly, you will be expected to be at clinicals at the hospital by 7am, and if I recall, the LATEST train arriving at Stony Brook to get you there on time arrives @ 330am (!!!!!) ... After that the next train arrives @ 730am. The LIRR station is clear across the campus from the HSC, so plan on waiting for the campus bus to take you there or hiking it by foot, that adds 20-30 minutes to your commute. From Brooklyn, I assume you will catch the train at Atlantic Terminal, which means you will have to transfer twice, at Jamaica AND Huntington. Two-hour commute each way. Don't plan on studying much on the train, after lectures and clinicals all you are gonna want to do is sleep, trust me, especially after those LONG lecture days. After all, this is the accelerated program.

I know someone in my class who made it work via LIRR, but she lives in Huntington and had access to a car on clinical days. Brooklyn or anywhere from NYC without a car sounds bad.

I lived in South Setauket for $400/mo while in the program. It was a true rathole per se lol but I was willing to put up with it for a year which I did. It was a 7 min drive door to door and if I had to I could have taken the local bus to campus which stops at the hospital (connected indoors to the nursing school / HSC). If you look hard enough you can find something you can afford, it is not ALL expensive if you are willing to sacrifice some things.

Just giving you a heads up, I think it will be wiser to live near campus. This program is too intense to complicate it more with commuting issues.

yeah Im from brooklyn too but I have a car. i would like to live off south P or literally no more than a 10 minute drive to stony brook as long as the living conditions are nice lol. especially since the program starts in the summer, west is way too expensive. well we have some time but if anyone will be interested please let me know!!

Paco-RN, thank you so much for your advice. I have a car and I am certainly very reliant on it, but driving an hour and a half (without traffic) every day to classes seems a lot. I would definitely love to be close and not have to worry about commute.

Anna91, If there is something not too expensive and descent I am definitely interested. I think it would make a lot more sense to be closer to the school and it would save a lot of hassle.
