Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

Hi all!

I was curious if anyone had experience commuting from Queens to Stony Brook for this program? ?

Hello everyone. I really want to get into Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Program which starts this Summer. I am just wondering did anyone hear from the school or got a interview?

Hey Guys

I am gonna graduate this fall and would like to apply to Stony Brook ABSN Program. I was wondering if I should start with a graduate application or undergraduate application?

Hello everyone!

Newly accepted ABSN student here. I was hoping those of you who have been accepted and in the program for some time now can help me answer some questions.
- I would be commuting from queens for about an hour and change, has anyone done this successfully?

- how much of the program is online VS in person?

- Where are clinical held? How far into Long Island can they be? And how many days a week?

- How would you rate the program from 1-10?

A single person doesn’t have to answer all questions but I would love as much info as I can. Thank you so much!

@biancarod I was just accepted into the program as well and will be commuting from Queens as well (Woodside). I'm also really curious about how those of you who are about to graduate the program managed the commute. Any info is greatly appreciated! ?

Hello

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted....I am a current ABP student graduating in May 2022. I am fortunate enough to live close to the hospital but I know some student who lives far and some students chose to commute (from queens) others chose to rent a room or apartment close by. If you can afford it, get yourself a room closer to stony brook. Sometimes we have a full day 12 hours and drive back and forth can be very tired. and don't forget you still have to go home to study and stuff.

The Summer session is the HARDEST... we were 75 by then end of the Summer, we down to 70 I think. So it's easy to fail a class, they don't kid with you when they say a 73.9 is not a 74. And you have to be on time, no time to miss class. BE AVAILABLE. So I honestly recommend you to NOT work at least during the Summer session, YOU JUST CAN'T... Exam one after another, you have 6 classes in 10 weeks. so a lot of information to grasp. I personally had a meltdown, a panic attack when one of my classmate was kicked out because of failing mid Summer.

Consider yourself lucky to be in the program, it is GREAT... And you will get all the support you need, but you have to put 200% of yourself in it. If you make it through the Summer, you will be fine...LOL

We had a lot of lecture on zoom during Summer, but don't count on that anymore. They want to be more in person, covid or no covid... They realize that students need to be prepared to deal with covid so put your N95 on if needed.

How would I rate this program? 100 out of ten.

So buckle up, it will be a beautiful and stressful journey. I am just so excited right now to graduate real soon and so proud of everything I've learned so far.

I hope I answer some of your questions.

oh I forgot to mention clinicals.

They can be anywhere on Long Island. They can at Stony Brook, the VA in Northport, Rokonkoma, Northwell in Queens, you won't know until schedule is released which is usually a few days before the session starts or Summer if your clinical site requires paperwork and online training to be completed prior. SO although I lived close to Stony Brook, I still had to drive for clinical in Queens and Northport.

That was such an informative response, I appreciate it @jc_nurse ! If you don’t mind I actually had a few other questions. I was checking online and couldn’t find much info about classes offered in the Summer. Do you mind mentioning how the classes were divided between each semester? Also, I’d like to start reading up on pharm and patho so would it be possible to ask for syllabi for both classes? Thanks so much again for taking the time to help us newbies out.

@jc_nurse Thank you immensely! You've eased a lot of my anxieties about the program.. I really do feel SBU is going to be a great fit for me. One more question and similar to what the above post just mentioned.. how is 69 credits divided over three semesters?! That's the most daunting part to me. I've not seen any other ABSN program with that many credits in such a short amount of time LOL.

hi guys,

Summer session is 21 credits, Fall 23 credits and Spring 25 credits.

You'll have pathophysiology in Summer, and pharm in Fall.

I would not worry to much about studying months in advance, what I did before starting since I had NO background in nursing, I watched a lot of Youtube videos about anything regarding nursing.

the most important thing is : BE ORGANIZED, Do not procrastinate once you start.

Good luck

@biancarod for each course, you will be require to purchase the online material, it comes with quizzes and ebook, and each professor will provide you with powerpoint slides of their lecture, honestly I started reading books and had to quit after couple weeks, how can I read 20 different chapters in 2 weeks, I'm not kidding LOL, thank God the powerpoint slides give you a great summary of what is in the book, so basically the professors give you the most important points, so focus on their slides, use the book as secondary source(or you'll go crazy).

I really appreciate you replying to everyone’s questions, and congrats on making it to your last semester! I think I the interview the faculty said clinicals are randomized - is that every semester and is every part of it random (days, location, unit)? I have a wedding one weekend this Summer and am wondering what happens if my clinicals are on weekends or if I should just plan to be totally unavailable for anything besides school and clinicals all Summer.

I’m also curious how wide the range of different experiences are - like can you always get peds to gerontological to psych or do you only get exposed to certain populations at random?
