Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Published

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

does anyone know anything about orientation? Around when it is, or if it is a day or several days?

I honestly haven’t received any information from SB. Only the one email about making a NETID

I am a current student in the program and they made our orientation online. It was listed as a course on blackboard and we were just required to look through it and I think there was some forms that needed to be filled out. The course was released to us about a week before the program started. If things get better the incoming class might get an in person orientation but if not it will probably be the same as the one my class had.

@dbarrera108Hello, thank you for this useful information. Since you're currently in the program. what advice can you give someone like myself with no medical background... Do you have any recommendation on how to get prepared for the program? any books we should read or things we should do in the next couple months? When did your session start? When did you start having clinicals? Sorry for all the questions, but anything you can share would be greatly appreciated. Stay safe!

I had some medical background prior to starting the program so I don't know if I can be of much help with that. There are plenty of people in the program who had no medical background however and are doing just fine. I honestly don't think there is any way to prepare for the program. The program is definitely hard and unlike anything I had done before. You just get thrown in and figure it out as you go in terms of managing your time and how to study. I think you should take the next couple of months easy because once you start it'll be a while before you can relax again. They require the Saunders Strategies for Success book and that has helpful test taking tips so I would recommend reading that but you don't need to do that until the very beginning or once you start the program. The other thing I recommend is getting your health forms completed promptly once they are emailed out. My Summer session started the second week of June and it was 10 weeks. Clincials also started the first week of classes and went until the last week.

@dbarrera108 thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions... I really appreciate it. I hope you don't mind one last question... (smile).... regarding clinicals, are they done at Stony Brook Hospital or other locations? I promise, I won't bother you with anymore questions... LOL

@prospectivenursingstudent I really don't mind I'm happy to help! Clinicals are done all over the island. People were as far out in Riverhead and others were in Queens. When we started in June some hospitals were not taking students so everyone was at Stony Brook I believe. There is something called SB24 where 24 students are selected and will have all of their clinical rotations at Stony Brook. This was usually something students applied for but this year they just randomly selected clinical groups. I was in one of these groups and had all my clinicals at SBUH up until this semester.

@dbarrera108 Thank you very much for your comments. They were really helpful. Since you are a current student, would you mind if I email you for some questions. I got accepted, and it would be great to connect with you and ask for some advices. If yes, please let me know your email. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone that was on the waitlist heard back from the program? If so, did you receive a phone call or an email? Thank you!

Hi everyone, I'm interested in applying for next year and was just curious, was there a recency requirement for your prerequisites? My classes were all done around 2009, and I am curious if I will need to retake them.

I think your prereqs can't be more than 10 years old, so you might have to retake them. But check the website to see what specific requirements they have

Thanks sp123! I wrote to ask them about it because there's no information on the website or in the pre-recorded information sessions stating there is an expiration on the prerequisites. Hoping they get back to me soon, so I can register for classes if needed!
