Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Published

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

Hi everyone!

I submitted my application on the 7th and I am so nervous because my undergrad GPA isn’t the greatest including my pre-req GPA but I do have my masters in health administration and my cumulative GPA was a 3.9. I also currently work as an office manager in a cardiology practice. I am hoping I get the chance to be interviewed. Fingers crossed for everyone!

I am sure you’ll be fine LOL

Thanks everyone!! And is it true the new dean look at it more holistically than the old dean? Also, around how many people apply each year if you guys know?

My apologies for answering your question weeks later. My course workload has been pretty heavy this semester, so I haven’t logged into this forum since early last month. ?

I’ve heard the same thing about the current dean taking a more holistic approach to reviewing applications. However, I’ve only heard that from other applicants and not anyone involved in the program, so I’m unsure how true that is.

Also, as of October 7, the program director said that they had received 800+ applications. It’s probably increased since a lot of people (myself included ?) submit on the due date. I think it’s around 800 every year.

Anyone hear anything yet? I wonder if they'll be doing in-person interviews the way they did prior to the pandemic...
Best of luck, everyone!

I believe interviews will be conducted via Zoom this time around.

Hoping we’ll all hear something tomorrow, if they’re still following the same timeline!

Good luck, everyone!

Hi everyone!
I applied to SBU as well as other ABSN programs that begin in Spring 2021. As others have mentioned before, I worry about not hearing back from SBU before the other programs begin.

Does SBU typically not accept a student with previous nursing credits? Like if I were to begin another ABSN program in January and then get an acceptance letter from SBU later that month, will SBU have a problem with the classes that I started for a few weeks already?

I would email and talk to the nursing department at SBU. I know some schools will accept transfer credits but other are more strict on that since they would like students to take all nursing courses at their nursing school. I’m not sure which type SBU is. Also if you chose to go that route, I’ve seen certain nursing programs tend to not accept students who were already previously enrolled in a musing program, so I would ask about that too since you’d have to drop out of a program after the Spring.

Ah okay thank you for the info. I have not taken any nursing classes in the past, so it's not something that would show on my transcripts.

However, I was accepted to another ABSN program which I already made a deposit for just in case. This program starts mid January, and apparently SBU sends acceptance letters at the end of January. So I wonder if SBU will have a problem with me having started the other program for a few weeks. I actually wouldn't even get credits for the other program if that was the case because I would have to withdraw if I were to get accepted into SBU's program.

All these different timelines make the application process so stressful! LOL

I couldn’t imagine how stressful it must be to make decisions! All the programs I’ve applied and been accepted into so far start in May so thank god I don’t need to worry about that!

Has anyone heard anything yet about interviews? Super nervouss!

Last year they sent out the first round of interview invitations this week (Monday after Columbus Day weekend)!
