Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Published

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

based on old forums, do you guys know when is judgement day? (aka the day of acceptance/rejection)?

There’s no specific day I believe, but last year they didn’t hear until late January, early February.

I could honestly cry I am so relieved. Finally submitted application!!

OK I found this but it's 10 years ago:

There are about 500 applicants each year. There is space for 64 students each year. The average GPA for the 2010 was 3.4. However, there were a few students near the minimum GPA that did make it.

A large range of GPAs are accepted, but the most important factors are science/math GPA, letters of recommendation, and the personal statement. That means students with low GPA for their first bachelor’s degree should definitely try to get into this school with a stellar essay where the student pours her heart out. Because of the great importance of the personal statement, it should be carefully written and critiqued by others before submission.

I think that’s definitely accurate in some ways, like how they really care and look at the essay and LORs but I feel like a lot has also changed in terms of what nursing programs and SBU’s one specifically look for. Like, ABSN programs are a lot more popular/well-known than they were 10 years ago so it would make sense that the program’s criteria for applicants has changed as well. And if I remember correctly, the Nursing program has a new Dean that started just a couple years ago so that definitely changes things too. But we never know what might happen! And we still have interviews too, which is a great way to really show them who you are!

Let the nail biting begin... good luck everyone ?

I have a few questions. The online information session video says that you only need 3 of 4 sciences. Is that true or rather how does that work? Because the full list of pre reqs states Chem, Micro, A&P l and ll.

Yep that is true. You need at least three of the four science prerequisites in order to apply. I applied with all prereqs completed except microbio. I’m taking that right now

Understood, so you need at least 3 to APPLY, but all 4 completed to be admitted.
