Stomachaches

Published

I am at middle school it seems like lately I have been getting a lot of stomachaches right after lunch usually in the afternoon after 1pm. I mean a lot of them!! I am debating if I should send out a email to teachers to try and keep kids in class and offer restroom instead. Really I cant do much for a stomachache anyways. What do you do??

Middle schoolers are also notorious for challenges - hot sauce challenge, hot cheetos challenge. I had a student vomit after the hot sauce challenge - he was quite disappointed to just get crackers and milk instead of heading home.

I agree. The first time I saw "flamming hot cheetos puke" I was shocked. It looked and smelled like Nuclear waste. I have had many issues this year with hot pepper challenges, a kid snorting Fun Dip etc. at lunch. Right now the stomach aches are related to just getting back from Spring Break and having to start the next 2 weeks with our second round of state testing. Other than the obvious causes of stomach aches, I swear some of these kids are developing ulcers from anxiety related to school pressures, bullying, scared the school is going to be "shot up" Makes me sad for kids this age.

We all understand where you are coming from!!!

Some of our Jr High kids have had table parties at lunch where they all bring in junk food to share. I had a kid come in with a stomach ache once and I asked him what he had for lunch and it was something like "1/2 a bag of doritos, 3 cupcakes, cookies, and a liter bottle of mountain dew. I sent him back to class and told him that I hoped he learned his lesson.

I take my everready tympanic thermometer, in it's handy quick draw holster, take the temp and kick 'em back to academia. I have them drink 12 oz. of water if it seems severe, wait 5 minutes and back if no emesis. No viral infected person can stand water on their gut > 5 minutes.

We had our standardized English 1 state testing yesterday and MAN - you would not BELIEVE how many stomach aches we had....

We had STAAR testing yesterday and today - lots of stomachaches, headaches and parents sending in single doses of allergy meds with their kid for them to use "just in case" during testing...ugggg - had 6 kids bring me a baggies of allergy medication to use - unlabeled, no consent forms or emails from parents. Why didn't they just administer it at home???

I was actually pleasantly surprised I didn't have more business yesterday because of STAAR testing. But, I only saw 24 people in the clinic, and that included my medications. Happy Day!

I take their temp, offer them to use the restroom, and give them a peppermint. I tell them there is nothing I can do for them unless they vomit, and do not allow students to lie down in the clinic unless it seems severe. They can "rest and digest" in their desks in the classroom!

Same with me and I just call parents, and most of the time they tell them to suck it up and go back to class.

The week of the Middle School Science Fair that was on Thursday I had a huge influx of headaches, stomach aches, and malaise. I found the outbreak was cured by Friday, after the Science Fair was over.

I've sent out a lovely "stomachaches after lunch are sometimes just digestion" information email to staff to educate them that stomachaches are not 100% an indicator of vomiting. I was surprised by how many teachers were surprised at this fancy new information.

I'm at elementary, though

This! I finally got fed up with kids coming FROM lunch that I had a chat with the aides and found out they were afraid someone MIGHT vomit. Kidsninhale their food and yes get stomachaches. I told them unless someone actually vomits, to stop sending me 20 kids per lunch period. Just stop. 49 days to go.
