STILL don't have a job?? Vent here!

Nurses New Nurse

Hi all! I've been on this site for a while now, but haven't posted much. however, i feel like it'll just make me (and hopefully a few others) feel a bit better about this whole job situation if we vent it out together. i just need to complain, and i need people who understand how frustrated and hopeless i'm feeling.

i graduated from a somewhat prestigious university over a year ago, and passed my nclex without a bead of sweat. great grades, great clinical experience, killer references and resume....still can't get a job. i live in the northeast, where things are tight...but still. i work at the grocery store...THE GROCERY STORE! i paid $100,000 to get a degree so that people can supervise how i bag their eggs and talk to me like i'm stupid. i have nothing against my current job - they're great to me and it pays my bills kinda sorta for now - but it's so damn frustrating!

on top of all of this, i'm getting so sick of people constantly saying to me "but i thought we needed nurses!"...when is oprah gonna do a show about all of us who are graduating and finding a completely closed off job market? and now that a second year of nurses are finishing up, us 2008 grads are getting more and more lost.

it's not like i'm not trying - i apply to jobs nearly non stop. i call and ask for nurse managers and recruiters personally, who never answer their phones or my voicemails. i feel like a complete and total failure pretty much all of the time, and don't know what to do. i have at least 15 friends in the same boat, but none of them currently live nearby and i don't have anyone to talk to about these feelings. i cry a lot when i'm alone, but put on a big smile and just tell people i'm staying optimistic and i'm still looking etc. etc.

anyway - if you wanna chime in, please do. i know our families and friends are probably getting sick of listening to us talk about this stuff, so it feels better to talk to strangers who understand. :)

much love and keep the faith, my friends. we're gonna rise above this someday.

I'm sorry Sandra! I too promised myself, my husband and my kids that things would be better and everyone just had to hang on until I graduated. Hah!

Today my husband got called in to work at 4am so he came home at 3pm. I jumped into my suit, grabbed my resume packs and applied at 3 nursing homes nearby. It would have been 4 but I couldn't find the last one to save my life! :lol2: I expect nothing will come of it. At one place the DON was at the desk when I walked in and asked if they were hiring. When she found out I was a new grad she politely excused herself and walked away. :( I'm trying to consider it a learning experience on what I should have done better. :D I feel better than I did last week. I appreciate the support here.

I too had a difficulty applying, had a year work experience as private duty and they feel it was nothing. But what got me the interviews i guess is

prayers and determination. Called and called and called for places to apply and called and applied some more. Hoping even 1 would call out of a hundred. Well, we may stumble across one that is hiring... Best of luck to us... Crossin fingers stil

Um......how can you not be able to get job. There are tons of jobs for RNs.

I am assuming that you are in New Jersey. Check out west, Texas is offering 20k sign on bonus in San Antonio.

Really? For a New Grad RN? Do you happen to have the name of the hospital?

I don't know how I got on this forum but I am here now. So...........I am going to suggest something. I know you guys need to work and want to work....have you considered challenging the Paramedic Exam in your area. It won't be possible in all areas but if you can challenge it then you would be able to work as a Medic, and you would probably learn allot. I also have a comment and please don't yell at me like you do when I roll into the ED at 0320 in the morning:eek:

I teach Scuba, last summer had a group of new grad nurses in my scuba course. They were so stoked they wanted to keep going right thru to the rescue diver program. During the rescue diver course I went over the Emergency Medical portion very quickly, I even mentioned that since they were nurses that they should do fine on the practical and the final exam. Well they all failed the final, and I was like,,,,,,,,hmmmmmmm what the heck went wrong. So..............we started talking about the questions they missed.

I realized that they had assimilated so much information that is was hard to recall. So.........here is my point. Maybe when you get into an interview you could express verbally that you know your meds, rules of administration, ACLS, Mega Code, EKG, and that would let them know you are capable of going to work on the floor.

Like I said don't yell:eek: It is just an idea.

Ohaumedic I appreciate you are trying to be helpful, but your statements assume we can either pick up and move to TX or that we should once again switch careers. Neither of those are that great to hear when you just put yourself and family through hell to finish nursing school. It's not that we can't find jobs because we just don't know what to say or aren't trying. It is really, truly hard to find a job as a new grad RN.
