Hi all! I've been on this site for a while now, but haven't posted much. however, i feel like it'll just make me (and hopefully a few others) feel a bit better about this whole job situation if we vent it out together. i just need to complain, and i need people who understand how frustrated and hopeless i'm feeling.
i graduated from a somewhat prestigious university over a year ago, and passed my nclex without a bead of sweat. great grades, great clinical experience, killer references and resume....still can't get a job. i live in the northeast, where things are tight...but still. i work at the grocery store...THE GROCERY STORE! i paid $100,000 to get a degree so that people can supervise how i bag their eggs and talk to me like i'm stupid. i have nothing against my current job - they're great to me and it pays my bills kinda sorta for now - but it's so damn frustrating!
on top of all of this, i'm getting so sick of people constantly saying to me "but i thought we needed nurses!"...when is oprah gonna do a show about all of us who are graduating and finding a completely closed off job market? and now that a second year of nurses are finishing up, us 2008 grads are getting more and more lost.
it's not like i'm not trying - i apply to jobs nearly non stop. i call and ask for nurse managers and recruiters personally, who never answer their phones or my voicemails. i feel like a complete and total failure pretty much all of the time, and don't know what to do. i have at least 15 friends in the same boat, but none of them currently live nearby and i don't have anyone to talk to about these feelings. i cry a lot when i'm alone, but put on a big smile and just tell people i'm staying optimistic and i'm still looking etc. etc.
anyway - if you wanna chime in, please do. i know our families and friends are probably getting sick of listening to us talk about this stuff, so it feels better to talk to strangers who understand. :)
much love and keep the faith, my friends. we're gonna rise above this someday.
as I've posted on NY section on forum:So I'm pretty much in the same boat as many other people but I just needed to vent to someone other than my fiance. Currently I live in nyc but I'm moving up to Albany to move in with him (my fiance). Problem is I can't. I do not want to move in and not be able to afford living up there without a job nor do I want to put more of a burden financially on him especially since he is in his first year of an entrly lvl position. I think I've applied to every hospital I can think of (Albany med, st. peters, seton/st. mary's, ellis, albany memorial and samaritan)...am I missing any I mean these can't be the only hospitals in the area? Its really frustrating because I want to work...I graduated in June took my boards first week of August and passed and now I feel like every hospital has turned me down. I've called and of course I've gotten "thank you for your interest in Insert hospital name here but unfortunately we do not have any positions open for new grads"...mind you what gets me is that they have positions open on their site and I know they want someone with experience but I'm sorry if they didn't want me to apply they should have just put it on the job description that they want someone with experience and not give me false hopes about scheduling an interview date, not hear from them after I tell them dates I'm free only to get an email back after a week of calling only to say (in other words) "oops my bad didn't see the part that said you were a new grad sorry and better luck next time
." How are you supposed to get experience if you can't work, how are you supposed to get a job if you have no experience...and i'm so sick of reading...."oh one of the easiest fields to get a job in is nursing" well its complete bull...
I'm just really frustrated...I've cried so much about it that I have the puffiest eyes you have ever seen...what can I do if there are no other hospitals in the area to apply to...do I spend another year in the city living off of my parents where jobs are even harder to find and also add on to the 3 years already apart from my fiance? I mean I really don't know what to do anymore....I'm still waiting to here from albany med and samaritan and albany memorial but after calling and hearing how they get 100's of applications I'm just slowly losing hope I'm even thinking about joining a semi-private online group full of nurses from one of the hospitals just to see if i can beg them to tell a nurse manager about me...I don't know what to do anymore...any advice would be great..
Personally I applied to every single company that hired Nurses. Hospitals, LTCs, SNFs, Rehab, Home Health, Hospice, Dr offices etc.
I finally got a bite in a LTC...where I am working now. Beggars can't be choosers.
One thing I did that my brother suggested was I went into the Yellow Pages and pulled the fax numbers of every single Dr office/Urgent Care and just faxed my resume to all of them. Must have faxed to about 150-200 offices lol.
Use the saturation method. If only 1 out of 1000 people are willing to hire you then apply to 2000 people lol.
BTW, I got my license in April, been at my job for 2 weeks...your definitely not alone.
The problem? Too many students(graduates) going into this field and not enough "experienced" nurses.
I would characterize the problem as #1 too many retired/non working Nurses returning to the field since their spouses lost their retirement/job and #2 census being down since everyone is holding off their elective surgeries etc.
Ok, so I haven't read this whole thread, but have read key parts. No one has mentioned two INTEGRAL things about job hunting.
1) Contact a hiring agency! They know where to put new grads as well as experienced nurses.
2) Check out the Visiting Nurses associations. In MA they are in a huge shortage of RNs for VNA's. They offer huge sign on bonuses and everything.
Open the phone book people, and stop the pity party. What's meant to happen will happen, but you have to work to get it!

I think some if not most of us have tried that...most want someone with experience min of 1-2 years:bluecry1:
Little Mouse, Yes! I'm getting the run around with my school to just get a transcript and I am sooo frustrated at this point because I keep seeing new graduate jobs in Louisiana but I cant apply or even be considered because I dont have a license! So its like pulling teeth!
I hope that dream comes true!! For all of us! On the upside, I will say that the job market is looking up in certain areas. Some places you just have to dig really deep. And it is sooo hard to resist the urge to apply to any and every job considering new grads. But I feel we are desperate! Some hiring managers may still find it offensive but its the truth. I'm starting to feel like hr looks at my apps to telemetry, acute care, peds, ets floors and say "Another desperate GN, we wont hire her!"
An uphill battle...

Yes, I've talked to agencies and they want experience. And also, this forum is to vent about our job search. Whether good or bad, we talk about it here...
"Open the phone book people, and stop the pity party. What's meant to happen will happen, but you have to work to get it! " quoted from pearchaos...
I find this really offensive and rude to all of us, who are you? a new graduate with a job, a working nurse, I can speak for most of us when I say I have tried all of that and called a million numbers and talked to a million agencies, LTC, hospitals, visiting nurses, home care, bayada, flu clinics, doctor's offices, red cross and a million other jobs. You don't know where we live or what oppurtunities are available to us, someone might except NG's there but not here for that same position.
So I am sorry to be blunt, but I am very offended and think many of us are. I am not having a pity party, I am working very hard everyday to try to land a job many other new grads are trying for too. You don't know us or are lives or our work ethic. Thanks.

:crying2:Ummm, if you didn't want to read about our pity party then why did you click on our thread in the 1st place?? It does say to "VENT HERE." Obviously we want to let our frustrations out especially those of us who have done all the above and MORE (like me). Use your "nursing" experience and be more compassionate to your fellow peoples.

Hi all, I'm a new grad also and I have some news for you! Alright, hopefully this isn't a repeat of what anyone has said so far, but I thought I would let you all know about a company I just found on careerbuilder. I am not sure of what other areas they service, as I'm in CT, but it seems to be a company reaching from NY to Texas, so its worth a shot to look if your area is on there right? It's called Mollen Immunization Clinics. Basically they hire licensed RNs and LPNs (even new grads according to their ad!) for flu clinics throughout the area. Everything from employers who have clinics for their employees to the local pharmacy clinic, etc...
Okay, no it may not be a full-time, long term position if it is available in your area, but it seems to be something simple to earn a little extra cash while you're waiting for the big break. It's flexible hours too, so what the heck right? I applied yesterday, and I will give you all an update if I hear something soon!
