Hi all! I've been on this site for a while now, but haven't posted much. however, i feel like it'll just make me (and hopefully a few others) feel a bit better about this whole job situation if we vent it out together. i just need to complain, and i need people who understand how frustrated and hopeless i'm feeling.
i graduated from a somewhat prestigious university over a year ago, and passed my nclex without a bead of sweat. great grades, great clinical experience, killer references and resume....still can't get a job. i live in the northeast, where things are tight...but still. i work at the grocery store...THE GROCERY STORE! i paid $100,000 to get a degree so that people can supervise how i bag their eggs and talk to me like i'm stupid. i have nothing against my current job - they're great to me and it pays my bills kinda sorta for now - but it's so damn frustrating!
on top of all of this, i'm getting so sick of people constantly saying to me "but i thought we needed nurses!"...when is oprah gonna do a show about all of us who are graduating and finding a completely closed off job market? and now that a second year of nurses are finishing up, us 2008 grads are getting more and more lost.
it's not like i'm not trying - i apply to jobs nearly non stop. i call and ask for nurse managers and recruiters personally, who never answer their phones or my voicemails. i feel like a complete and total failure pretty much all of the time, and don't know what to do. i have at least 15 friends in the same boat, but none of them currently live nearby and i don't have anyone to talk to about these feelings. i cry a lot when i'm alone, but put on a big smile and just tell people i'm staying optimistic and i'm still looking etc. etc.
anyway - if you wanna chime in, please do. i know our families and friends are probably getting sick of listening to us talk about this stuff, so it feels better to talk to strangers who understand. :)
much love and keep the faith, my friends. we're gonna rise above this someday.

I am really starting to get worry about my future as an RN after reading this...How are we supposed to have experience in the field if we are new-grad???I am starting my clinicals this September, and I will be graduating July-August 2011 as an RN in the state of Michigan. I have already finished my prerequisites and have completed half of the BSN classes ( the ones I could do prior to my clinicals). The only thing I can say is maybe you could remain in school to advance toward a BSN, keep living off student loans, and try to find a part time job in the healthcare field to acquire experience while completing your BSN, so that when you are done, you can then apply and show that you do in fact have experience. BSN completion is not as arduous as the LPN and RN, so you could work while doing so. And while you are in school, you do not have to start repaying your student loans.
Also, since July 2009, student loans repayment can be rolled into the IBR plan ( income-based repayment), which allows you to repay only based on your income and your family size, not on what you actually owe. Call your lender for infos. Stafford loans (Direct or FFEL) are the ones you can used the IBR for. You repay for 25 years, but only what the ratio shows (exemple: If you are a single parent of 1 child and make 35k/year, the monthly payment is around $165, if you do have two children, it is $85, and so forth, no matter how much you owe), and after the 25 year period, the remainer of the loan is forgiven. And when you work fulltime in healthcare, teaching, or governmental sectors, your loan can be forgiven after 10 years instead of 25.
Do anyone know when hospitals will lift their hiring freeze? And how are the job prospects in Michigan?
I would like to be able to relocate, but I am a single mom sharing joint custody, and if I move out of state, it puts my custody rights at risk...so this is not an option...
And is there someone who could tell me what position I could filled as a new grad RN to gain experience while I complete my BSN
It is the sign of the times....I feel it for you dear NG's...I noted nowadays many hospitals are going through hire freeze, does not matter is you have experience or not...they are not willing to cross train either...so if you are X specialty nurse, guess what....slim chance anyone will want to cross train you to do anything else if you wish to change your specialty....everyone wants experienced nurses, they are picky in time when there are not many nurses in the field left, and not many going into it....why not hire new grads and train them right, treat them right so the RN would be happy, the hospital would be happy and so would be the pts....I guess that would make too much sense to those bussines people who are running the hospitals nowadays and have little or no clue about nursing and nurses.....hope they stay healthy and not need RN service, because thay may get one of the nurses who is burned out, hates her specialty, is overworked and underpaid......
Best of luck to all!
PS Im just bit***ing...overall I love nursing and am not one of those nurses I described but worked with plenty.....
wow I will be graduating this dec 09 and I never though that there ever be such a huge ordeal for a nursing position. I am terrified at the prospect of no job after graduation however I am tryig to remain optimistic and finish the semester out. class of may 09 I heard only less than 40 % graduate RN have accuired a nursing position. I would strongle encourage writing to congressmen and state personnel to maybe reconisder foreign nurses till usa grad nurses are employed.
Hunt down all the SNFs and LTCs in your area. I found many of them were not listed anywhere and did not come up on Google searches. I literally drove around and wrote down all the nursing homes, LTCs and SNFs I saw and then applied.
The nice thing is that nursing homes, LTCs, and SNFs tend to pay really well. I make more than anyone I graduated with who work in the acute care setting. Hell I make almost $5 more an hour!
I will be honest in saying that the work is not always pleasant. Very high Nurse/patient ratio and limited skill use but eh...pays the bills.
BUg out...I am also considering applying to a ltc facility, is the nurse/patient ratio really bad??? that is the main thing that terrifies me! I dont want to loose my license because i messed up doing something because i was sooo busy....
I have also heard that they pay more in ltc which is a plus in my end because we are really struggling with just my husbands income, do you have to assess, give meds to ALL patients?? and how lond did they train you for?? I know it will be different for me but i just want some info on it...thanks!

South Texas Health System doesnt offer a weekend differential. If you goto a critical care area as a new grad after 90 days your pay will be about $27.00/hr nights.
