not sure if you ever got the answer to this or if you already found a place but I live in albany been here for some time and: 1. they call it smallbany for a reason everywhere is like 15 mins away from each other (if you catch my drift) so you can practically live anywhere in the city of albany (not albany county...learned there is a difference...i'm originally from nyc lol) and still be like 15-20 mins away from AMC 2. def try to get a place further away from downtown albany especially the arbor hill area (yeah that area with doing call and having to walk out of your apartment at night...not safe!) although depending on your age you may like the downtown albany scene (albany is surrounded by colleges with AMC holding 5 of them (CRNA/PA/Pharm/Law/Medical) 3. so the further up albany the better a nice area that quickly comes to mind is the buckingham pond area near st. peters hospital which is like down the block from AMC good luck!!

thanks...i've also tried saratoga springs and st. mary's in amsterdam..."6 mos.-1 (or 2 years) med/surg exp required"...what I don't get is that they say that for a regular med/surg floor...isn't med/surg where they recommend most new grads start off? Yet in order to start off there you need experience...anyway I'll keep looking going to try glens falls ...thanks for the suggestions!!

yep both in the city and upstate been getting the "sorry we aren't looking for any but we'll keep you on file for "insert amount of time here" thanks for your interest" response. I'll keep trying though...*sigh*

as I've posted on NY section on forum: So I'm pretty much in the same boat as many other people but I just needed to vent to someone other than my fiance. Currently I live in nyc but I'm moving up to Albany to move in with him (my fiance). Problem is I can't. I do not want to move in and not be able to afford living up there without a job nor do I want to put more of a burden financially on him especially since he is in his first year of an entrly lvl position. I think I've applied to every hospital I can think of (Albany med, st. peters, seton/st. mary's, ellis, albany memorial and samaritan)...am I missing any I mean these can't be the only hospitals in the area? Its really frustrating because I want to work...I graduated in June took my boards first week of August and passed and now I feel like every hospital has turned me down. I've called and of course I've gotten "thank you for your interest in Insert hospital name here but unfortunately we do not have any positions open for new grads"...mind you what gets me is that they have positions open on their site and I know they want someone with experience but I'm sorry if they didn't want me to apply they should have just put it on the job description that they want someone with experience and not give me false hopes about scheduling an interview date, not hear from them after I tell them dates I'm free only to get an email back after a week of calling only to say (in other words) "oops my bad didn't see the part that said you were a new grad sorry and better luck next time ." How are you supposed to get experience if you can't work, how are you supposed to get a job if you have no experience...and i'm so sick of reading...."oh one of the easiest fields to get a job in is nursing" well its complete bull... I'm just really frustrated...I've cried so much about it that I have the puffiest eyes you have ever seen...what can I do if there are no other hospitals in the area to apply to...do I spend another year in the city living off of my parents where jobs are even harder to find and also add on to the 3 years already apart from my fiance? I mean I really don't know what to do anymore....I'm still waiting to here from albany med and samaritan and albany memorial but after calling and hearing how they get 100's of applications I'm just slowly losing hope I'm even thinking about joining a semi-private online group full of nurses from one of the hospitals just to see if i can beg them to tell a nurse manager about me...I don't know what to do anymore...any advice would be great..

Thanks so much for answering this.... you said they had an elaborate orientation program...what exactly do you mean by that? How long is the orientation program to lets say a med-surg floor?

Hi, I'm a new grad from an ASN program in the city. I'll be relocating to Albany after taking my NCLEX (and passing God willingly ) and I had a few questions...normally I don't post because my questions are already answered in other posts but here goes: I was thinking about working in Albany Medical Center...does this hospital have the full time 12Hr shifts (i.e. 7am-7pm)? (particularly in the Med/Surg units since that's where I'd like to start out and gain experience before moving to ICU). Are any of the RN's in Capital Region hospitals under NYSNA? Are there any hospitals in the capital region that take new grads with minimal experience (I've done a summer internship at a hospital in the city) and have the full time 12Hr shifts? Do any Nursing Homes in the Capital Region take new grads and have the full time 12hr shifts? I'm getting kind of worried cause most of my friends who have graduated before me are having a hard time finding a job in the city (most are at a hiring freeze or are only looking for nurses with experience) so I'm kind of wondering if thats the case in the Capital region as well. Can anyone also tell me about working at Albany Medical Center...as you can see I'm highly interested in the hospital since it kind of reminds me of Westchester Medical Center... Hopefully anyone will be able to answer my questions...sorry for the long post...Thanks!!
