Just wanted to say way to go on nursing him so long! My oldest is 4 and she is still nursing though FINALLY she is starting to wean I think, she's only nursing about 3-4 times a week for maybe a minute at a time. I'm kinda sad about it and happy at the same time.

Here is a link about weaning from kellymom.com (and excellent site btw):

Awww, it's kinda a sad and happy time when weaning happens huh? It just takes time and patience when it comes to weaning I think. Congrats on nursing him so long!

i breastfed my child until he was about 2 1/2. you just have to say no and stick to it. i know that it is a great time for mother/child bonding but once you make the resolve to stop your child will adapt easier than you think. i am so happy to hear of all you mothers who breastfed.

Weaning is such a bittersweet time. *sigh* I'm glad to hear the your son is adjusting to weaning without difficulty.

Please no one take this the wrong way, but I find it hard to believe that children 3 1/2 years old still nurse or take the bottle either one.

My kids were off the bottle when they were one.

I breastfed all 4 of my kids. The last two until they were 3. I weaned them gradually. I told them that we didn't do that outside, only inside the house. That way they weren't tugging on me out in public. Then we just cut down until one day it was no more. And when it was time to stop it was me who decided and it just stopped.

I still miss that close time between baby and me :o What a wonderful time that is in a baby and mom's life. And so short.

Well it really isn't that big of a stretch of the imagination. :) It happens all the time, all over the world. ;)

western society is odd. there's such a push to get kids off the breast early. the earlier the better. my sister just finished weaning hers and the kid is only 9 months. yet, in so many places all over the world, it isnt uncommon for a child to be on the breast for 2 years or more. i suppose we're just more "civilized" :uhoh3:

I told my three year old that the milk was gone, he had drank it all. he is now almost seven and talks fondly of breastfeeding and tells how he loved to nurse and drank all the milk until it was gone.

I was so glad to read all the posts from women who nursed their children for 3-4 years. I nursed child #3 through my fourth pregnancy and then tandem nursed after #4 was born - it was WONDERFUL. Ben was a little taken aback by the colostrum when Charli Mae was born, but they both settled into tandem nursing quite quickly.

I nursed Ben for 3 1/2 years but had to quit abruptly when Charli was 14 months old on the (wrong) advise of a doc after putting me on an antidepressant. It was a horrible time for both of us.

Anyway, glad to hear that weaning is going well for you and congratulations to all of you who nursed for so long, what a gift to your children.
