Hi, I was just wondering if there were any other students (or alumni or instructors) from Springfield Technical Community College on here.
It's fine if you are still taking pre-req's. I have to re-take micro over the summer, I missed it be literaly 0.1 of a point.
I thought the deadline was Feb....maybe they told us a good time was to remember to have it in by Valentines day or maybe they moved it back.
Anyway good luck!! Keep plucking away at those classes!
Hey Everyone
I can't believe the 1st semester is done already for all you STCC freshmen. So how was it? Was it easier or harder than you expected? I am getting so nervous and excited all at the same time. I am praying I get in for the fall.
My final in MICRO is tomorrow, so far I have a High B and I am hoping the exam tomorrow might bring me to the A- I am hoping for. All my classes are done except for ENG II which I will take online in the fall.
I need some advice and opinions. I am debating on whether or not to take the HESI but don't know how much they look at that. All they say you need is a 77%, I got an 80%. I scored high in the english, vocab and basic math but suffered in the antaomy and BIo part. Much of that I attribute to not taking MIcr, or A & P II yet. Bio, it's been like 15 years. Do you think it would be in my best interest and increase my chances of being accepted if I tried again and hopefully got a higher score? I really dont want to take it over if I dont have too. The rest of my grades are good, all A's and 2 B's. The b's are in A & P II and Micro. Do you think the B's are bad? Because there are so many applicants, do they look at the better grades and maybe take someone with straight A's? I don't know. You guys, I am sure, know more than me. What have you heard? Any advice would be helpful!! Also, I am getting nervous about doing nursing with two kids. They will both be three when and if I get accepted in the fall? Do you think this is something I can do? I also have to work, and that's another story. I am in banking right now but am thinking of getting my CNA again because I might have a more flexible schedule. I have to work, I cant get around that. I know it was hard with the kids this semester with trying to study and everything else. Does anyone know of any nursing scholarshops or student loan programs that would may help me out?
Sorry for such a long ramble
Hi!
I enjoyed my first semester of the program. I also have two kids. It was tough because you have to be very flexible, but doable if you have support. Some people in the program had similar grades as you and HESI score but I have no idea if they were excepted because of previous medical experience or references or just based off grades. Who gets accepted all depends on who applies that year. I would recommend you take English 200 during the summer(this one or next). You will really want to focus on the nursing stuff especially if you want a life!
This is just my opinion, hopefully some of the others will also give you there opinion so you have multiple views to base your decisions on. Like I said before who gets accepted all depends on the pool of applicantsWhen I applied to the program I had all of my prereq's done and a 4.0, I got an 88 on the HESI and no previous medical experience. I had one letter of recommendation from a previous professor. I know several of my friends had B's in A&P. If you do decide to take the HESI again, in the STCC bookstore they have these study sheets for A&P and medical terminology.(you can also find the same thing on-line and print for free) Review the medical terminology to help with the A&P - prefixes, suffixes, etc. As freshmen nursing students we actually have to take a HESI exam this January and again senior year, so they seem to like this test! As far as loans, many people got direct loans through the school that cover not only tuition but also books, childcare, rent, gas, transportation, etc. Financial aid should be able to tell you more. Also, you didn't ,mention it but I assume you took the med math on-line course, that needs to be done before you apply.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thanks for the info Tero. Yes I did take the online math course and got an A! Thanks, I will check out the HESI study helps
I need to really find more info on the student loans especially the ones on maybe getting a monthly stipend as the finances are a bit tight now with hubby laid off and possibly not being able to work a lot of hours due to school or taking a CNA job which would be a huge paycut for me. Would STCC's financial aid office be able to let me know more info and if I would even qualify? Does anyone know how much each semester is, books included. My fear is that I have to work and be too overwhelmed. My plan is to save my vacation to the fall and only work 3 days a week. I get like 200 hours of PTO, been at my job 12 years so that thankfully helps.
I didnt know about getting recommendation letters???? Do I need some to submit with my application?

Good job on almost having one more class done!!! I myself had mostly A's in the pre-req's but had some bad grades in my past that I was worried about coming back to haunt me (luckily they didnt). I know they look to see the more non nursing classes you have done in the curiculum(can't spell). The more done, the better your chances. I think an 80 is a good HESI grade, when I took mine there were 8 of us there, myself and 1 other got passing scores. If I were you I wouldnt retake it.
I'm currently searching for a new job and since I was perdiem (though still put in 20+ hrs a week I can't collect unemployment. Save, save, save and have a good support system and you should be just fine! Lots of people juggle the kids, work, and school! God Bless em! haha My hubby and I are waiting till after school to have lil ones (or so thats the plan)

Being in pre-reqs when you apply won't have any negative impact on you getting in. I'm pretty sure that most of us were in some sorta pre-reqs while applying. There were plenty of us that were taking A&P II. They have some time before they actually make a decision on who's accepted, so they will also consider your midterm grades. Which might only be based on one exam in some circumstances.
Just so you know, there are a few people in our program that have not taken microbiology yet. They are planning to in the Summer. So depending on what you have to take next fall, you may very well be able to apply with hopes of getting in as long as you have taken the Hesi. I think the application fee is like $10 for MA residents. Sometimes, they might accept you on condition you complete and pass certain courses in the Summer so that you may enter NS in the fall. But good luck!
