Has anyone taken Statistics??? I HATE Math, particulary Algebra...glad I have that part out of the way. Anyhow for those that have taken Statistics, I just wanted to get your view on the difficulty of the course, and if you think its a good or bad idea to take the course online or on campus. Your input is GREATLY appreciated.

I dreaded statistics like you would not imagine. I never had algebra in high school and here I was 47 y/o taking my first statistics class. Turns out it was more words than numbers and it made more sense to me for that reason. I made an "A" that semester and in the next level, in grad school made an "A". So do not compare it to other "math". You might find it really interesting.

I HATE math! We do not get along at all lol. I took stats online because I'll need it to bridge over to the BSN program when I'm done with my RN. I got an A by some miracle! The Khan Academy website was a HUGE help! I also loved my casio stats calculator because I could plug in the equations exactly as you would write them out on paper and just hit enter to get the answer. I think I only paid $15 for it a walmart. My friend had a TI 84 calculator and she used mine WAY more than hers. It can be done I'm proof :)

Math and I are not great friends either. I went the online route when I took the course. Our grade was based on the midterm and the final and nothing else. (Talk about pressure.) The only good thing was that if your grade on the cumulative final was better than your grade on your midterm, your midterm grade would actually get dropped. I took the midterm, got a D, and freaked out. I then proceeded to make the best decision I'd ever made, I admitted to myself that I am indeed a dummy. I promptly ditched my text book, went out and purchased "Statistics for dummies" took the final and got an A. I swear, with the number of times I've recommended that book, the "for dummies" franchise should start paying me. :cheeky: But it really did work well for me and I would highly suggest that book if you have trouble with the course, but I'm sure you'll do fine. :) Good luck!

Okay, DON'T TAKE STATISTICS ONLINE!!!!! Now, that I got that out, a little background. I have pulled 'A's in all of my nursing pre-reqs and for my original Bachelor's degree I graduated with honors. This was the hardest class I have ever completed. I ended with an 89% and it was fought, bled and cried for. It is like a foreign language if you take it without an instructor, I'm sure it would be better with a teacher.

Ok second question...do you think Stats in anyway helped in other nursing classes, or in the field at all???

I am not good at math I had to hire a tutor for my college algebra class and I dreaded taking statistics. I ended up taking it online because it was the only thing that I could do with my work schedule. I ended up liking statistics, found it easier for me then algebra, and got an A in the class. I wouldn't recommend taking it online but for me it was my only option also knowing my student center had a tutors available if I needed them helped. I think statistics was more interesting to me and my teacher used a lot of examples from the health care field to make it so nursing student could relate to it. I even ended up doing my final project on ventilator related pneumonias. I'm not sure if statistics has helped me in nursing school but whenever I read an article saying something is 150% of people have a disease I know it is not a legitimate statistic since nothing can be over 100% :)

How about that:yes: LOL

Our statistics professor said it would be helpful in the papers we would have to write in Nursing school. I got the feeling it was more for that than to help in your actual nursing career.

I would not take statistics online. I also have ALWAYS hated and struggled with math. Currently, I am enrolled in a stats class and it's not easy, but I don't think it is as hard as algebra! Someone told me that if you struggle in algebra then you will do fine in statistics because it isn't too much math, more logical thinking and really just knowing how to use the TI-84 calculator. My teacher isn't very good, but my school offers free tutoring and that tutor has been amazing. I currently have an A in the class with just six more weeks to go. Best of luck to you!

Yes Definitely helpful! I had papers or presentations every semester that required research basis or proof and the stats portion really helped me to know which articles were the best for my projects

I actually liked statistics and found it to be much easier than algebra because it is useful, something you can actually apply in real life (so is basic algebra, I'm just not fond of higher abstract math - imaginary numbers, that sort of thing).

oh yeah, when I needed math review and I went to a free website called coolmath.com

Everything is explained in a very simplified manner.
