Anyone else taking statistics this semester? Classes started today and I'm already feeling overwhelmed!

What is statistics exactly? I have to take it as a prereq for my BSN. I have only the statistics left to do and plan to take it in the Spring. I thought it was just math and graphs. Could you give us any detail? And why do we need statistics for nursing?
Thanks!
This is what my class description says about statistics: Probability; popoulation sampling; collection, tabulation, and graphing of data; frequency distributions; mean and standard deviation; normal distribution; correlation and regression, and tests for significance.
I'm taking it as a pre-req for the BSN nursing program, too.

I think I will wait for that one. It is a pre-requisite for the BSN, so I will not be in a hurry for it. :chair:
LOL. I wanted to take some other classes this semester and needed another class to make me full time. It was either nutrition or statistics. But, some of the BSN programs I like do not require nutrition, so I went with statistics.
ONLINE statistics, at that! heh.

I'm taking statistics online. We're already done with Ch. 1 and into ch.2., and it only started last wk!It's my first time using a graphics calculator, and I'm still just learing how to use it. So far so good, my grade for ch. 1 projects was 100% But I'm taking 11 units of math classes (for my minor), plus major classes, plus starting CNA training next week, so I'm not getting too excited about being able to do that the next nine chapters.:Crash:

I saw this thread, and felt like my mind was being read!!! I haven't started classes yet, but I have statistics this quarter too, and am a bit mistified about what I can expect. I am taking it with Cell Bio (just starting my bio pre-reqs) - I thought it would be easier to take Stats with Cell than with Anat/Phys or Micro. Am I wrong? I've done really well with math up to this point, but haven't taken Pre-calc yet (just found out the math I've taken thus far does not satisfy the requirements for my #1 choice nursing program, they want a math above 110). Any vets out there know if I should take pre-calc first, then stats, or will I be okay? I'm a bit scared about all this. My course description says the same thing as above, but still haven't got a clue what to expect! Thanks in advance for any input!
If you are using a TI calculator and need help, be sure to Google search. I found some great resources online about tips and tricks with my calculator. At least with college algebra, I could use the graphing function of my calculator to double check my work -- it was handy!
Are your tests online, too, or do you have to go to campus to take the tests? Our tests are on campus.
I'm not a vet, but I think you should be okay taking this class before pre-calc. How did you do in college algebra? Most of the BSN programs in my area don't require pre-calc.

From what I remember from stats, the math itself is not that hard. Basically you use formulas, and if you can come up with the right numbers for each component in the formula, you just plug them in and solve it. My stats class was offered through the psych department, so we had a lot of problems involving psych studies done and had to use the study data to come up with the stats (mean, median, mode, significance, and other things).
If you did okay in algebra, I think you'll be okay with the math.

I'm also taking statistics this semester. My class starts September 5, and I'm really nervous about it. I hate math, and it didn't help that as I was looking through the statistics book last night, and I was totally freaked out by all of the formulas that had weird-looking symbols for the mean and standard deviation, for instance. I don't see how I'm ever going to remember all of those formulas. I did well in algebra, but statistics seems VERY different to me.

I was originally scheduled to take stats; however, I just finished college math and decided to give my brain a rest from ALL math for awhile. Besides, I'm beginning Anatomy and am pretty sure I'll need lots of time to devote to that! Please let us know how it goes!
