Can anyone tell me what the average starting salaries are for new nurses (B.S.N.) at the major Philadelphia hospitals? I'm thinking UPenn, CHOP, Thomas Jefferson, Temple, Penn Presbyterian, Hahnemann, Einstein, etcetera.
Thanks!
It seems like the standard range for new grads in Philly is 27-28. I heard that Montgomery Hospital in the county starts around $25 for new grads.
For new grads, there really isn't negotiation room, and given the market, I really don't see hospitals hurting from having this information public. There are tons of nursing schools in the immediate area and even more in the not so immediate area.
I guess I can come out and say that as far as I've heard (from fellow new grads) all Penn Entities (HUP, Presbyterian & Pennsylvania Hospital) start new grads at 27.32. I'm fairly certain I heard this from recruiters at fairs & in published material so I think it's ok to share.
I haven't heard anyone really having success "bargaining salaries"--at least not at facilities with established Clinical Ladder Programs that you have to apply/achieve raises based on your experience and contributions (which I believe most Magnet Recognized Hospitals within the city have--at least places such as UPHS, Chop, Jefferson etc.)
There would be a notable differential between Union and non-union hospitals. That's something to consider when accepting a job (which is, from what I understand) why Temple would be considerably more than UPHS.
Good Luck!
Basically clerical in nature and granted I have 9 years with Penn invested but I am making over 22 with my 15% diff for nights
Hi goober, if you dont mind me asking, was it fairly easy to obtain a job at Penn, I have been applying there for so long but everyone tells me you have to know someone in order to even be considered....any info would be appreciated.
I started at Jeff in '08 with ~$28 straight out of nursing school. If I'm not mistaken, new grads now are about $29-something.
do you think its difficult for new grads now to find a position in philly hospitals?
I know philly is probably saturated with new grads and I might be moving to Philly area soon and have no idea what to expect
Despite the number of new grad nurses out there, Philadelphia and it's suburbs has something like 26 hospitals. It may be more difficult to find a position in the inner city hospitals but if you venture out to the suburbs, like with some Main Line hospitals, you'll be bound to find some postings there that are taking in new grads.
Best of luck :)

I partially agree with you. I think that it would be excellent if we could get wage information and use that to make an informed decision. In Philly, you all have that option, and that's awesome. Over here on the other side of the state, that's not so much the case. Market is as market does. When there's one show in town, there's one wage in town.
Good luck to you all. I hope that you are able to make informed decisions on where to work. Just also, please, in this market, don't try to hold out for the best salaries and price yourselves out of a job. If you're offered a job, count it as a blessing, learn from it, then take your experience (and your knowledge of what Penn pays!) down the street to Temple and ask for more money!
