I will be attending Los Angeles Valley College this spring and classes don't start until Feb. 09. Few of my friends told me I should take advantage of the last few weeks that I don't have school and just relax, because once it starts, there's no slowing down; on top of that, I plan to attend summer and winter sessions as well, so technically, I will not have any break in between spring and fall semesters.
I do try to relax, but find it hard to do so. I can't wait to start my pre-reqs, and I spend most of my days in front of computer researching and reading articles about the nursing programs and the healthcare industry. :typing
Anyone else going through the same thing???
Is it just me or school is surprisingly exciting especially when you know your heart:heartbeat and mind is in it???

I'm with you. For once, in a long time, I'm actually excited to be in school. It took me 4 semesters and a year off from school to realize what I want to do, but now that I know... school has never been so mind blowing. :) Good luck with your classes.
Thanks Giant Panda and good luck with your classes as well...

It IS exciting! I signed up for classes last Feb and had to wait almost 2 months before they started (my first class was a condensed 7 week class that ran the 2nd half of the reg semester) and I was practically jumping out of my skin with excitement! Now I've finished 4 classes and am getting ready to start back up for the next semester next week, and while the break was really nice, its starting to get really old too! Good luck hon! With the kind of attitude you seem to have, you'll do great!
Hi TerpGal02,
Do you mind me asking what classes you took during the short sessions? I am not sure if I should take anatomy, physiology, and microbiology during a short session or I should take it on a full semester length class. My options right now is to take anatomy & chemistry during the first summer session and physiology during the 2nd session, then micro & psychology 41 on fall to finish all my pre-reqs and apply to the program by January.
You think I should stick to this schedule or should I move some classes around and take some pre-reqs during winter instead of taking some core classes.
Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks again.

I always am bored when I am not in school; that being said I took 3 classes my first summer: they were Medical Terminology, Humanites, Algebra. I also work full time M-F. That was a very tough summer, although its over I will never take that many classes during the summer, unless of course I am not working! But it can be done!

WOW! Finally I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I am in a the same situation. I work M-F 9-5:30 and I took my first college course in winter 08.-English. I figured I would to just dip my feet in the water first. So this semester I'm taking Intermediate Algebra(in TX for BSN you need Algebra and Statistics) and US Hist.
I went to a vocational school and became a Pharmacy Tech. I've been working as a CPhT for 2 yrs now. It's a good job and easy money-the pay is really great. But it's now what I want to do. Plus I enjoy learning about the human body, medicine, helping people get feeling better.
I constantly find my self researching over every aspect online. You are not the only one. I am so excited and I really hope to succeed in nursing. I find myself not so dedicated to my job I have now but with the recession I have to keep reminding myself that I am lucky to even have a JOB. :typing I plan on taking 2 classes each semester and 2 classes in the summer. No winter classes though. What about you?

Hi Bound4nursing,
My counselor and I went over an academic calendar, which if I stick to, will let me finish all pre-reqs by Winter session. I will be a busy bee with school, but I know it will be worth it, in the end.
Good luck to you and thanks for replying.
That's great. I did speak with a great counselor as well over which courses I need to take that would most likely be transferred over to a nearby nursing school. I do not plan on moving.
I wasn't a straight A student so I just want to keep my GPA as pretty as I can. Do you know how long the winter and summer classes are, like how long you go MTWT for 2 hours a day or what? Is it like a minimester? Or maymester?

I too have just started my pre-regs. I have an M.Ed and I was surprised how many pre-reqs I was required to take. My school only takes 20 students at at time in the fall and spring. Because there are so many students who want to take nursing the waiting list is long. My school has a point system that is very hard, you must make at least 35 points for admission and with all of my previous education I could not even score that with out the pre-reqs.

I am in the same boat!
I start my pre-reqs at a local community college mid-Feb. :) I agree, let's relax before school starts. Once it does, it's going to be all about the books!!! I'm taking Psych, Developmental Psych, & Nutrition for this coming spring semester (I work FT). In the summer, I'm planning on A&P w/ lab, then chem & micro w/ labs in the fall. I also think I'll be needing Sociology (since some schools won't take my Intro to Cultural Anthro class), but I might take it online somewhere.
Good luck to you!

Sorry just seeing this now. I took Soc 101 in the 7 week session. I also took Preperation for Allied Health (which was kind of a HS Chem refresher for those with limited science backgrounds or those like me who hadnt had any science in 10 years LOL) and Speech in 5 week sessions over the summer. I did A&P in a regular semester and am doing A&P 2 that way too. If you take a condensed science course at my school though, the least amount of time it will be is 8 weeks. For me personally, I dont know if I could do any of the hard sciences condensed into such a short session like that. There is already SO much you have to learn in A&P, Chem, and Micro and to cram it all in over a summer session-wow that would be a lot.
