How inexpensive are you looking for because I doubt if there is anything less than $1000 a month in Scottsdale

oh really!! thats really expensive for someone who is still starting... have you heard of select specialty hospital in scottsdale? how i wish there is still a spot for me there - just cant wait to start working!!!

I would imagine you could share which would be so much cheaper I know there are girls who share at my hospital-that would probably be the best way to go initially.

I am not an expert on phoenix hospitals sorry but I am sure that somebody on here will have heard of the hospital you are going to.

oh really so it means that i has a high standard of living too huh!!! the exact location is in select specialty hospital - 3604 Wells Fargo Blvd Suite B Sottsdale Az 85251 - i got that from the internet. well, i hope the facility is good too---- and i hope there are inexpensive apartments for rent just around the block so that i need not to buy a car

That area is in south Scottsdale, the older part of town. It's much more reasonably priced than north Scottsdale, and you might be able to find something quite near the hospital. Good luck to you.

WOW!!!!

Just the thread I was looking for. I currently live in Cincinnati, Ohio and am considering moving to either Phoenix or Las Vegas. I was wondering if anyone had ever lived in LV and could tell me why you prefer one city over the other.

ALSO, if we move to phoenix we would need to live near the Univ., can anyone tell me what hospitals are near there...which ones to stay away from? Any general info would be greatly appreciated also...I am just starting my search so I have NO info on Phoenix and coming from Cincinnati i'm sure its totally different. Also, does anyone know if any of the hospitals in or around phoenix offer relocation assistance? I know a few do in LV.

oh btw I'll be a new grad Aug. 18th

Well, first off - congratulations!

Second off, which university are you talking about? ASU? We have a few here :)

I live in the East Valley (as you may have read previously) and after being here almost a quarter of a century, I wouldn't be anywhere else. We have a new freeway coming through this area (http://www.azdot.gov/Highways/RFS/santan/saindex.asp) which will bring you to both Gilbert Mercy hospital (opening up around the end of the year I think) and a new Banner hospital also being built not too far away :)

As a realtor (well, inactive now), I have some connections if you'd like more information about the market down here, what's available for what price, and all that jazz. This good friend of mine has helped a few students here looking to move from other states/countries as well :) If you'd like more info, just PM me :)

Do you have children? Talking to an RN in my family, she has a close friend who does travel nursing here in the valley but never goes out of state. She tends to pull in about 50/hr too, which given the standard RN rate of pay is spec-freakin-tacular =)

Lemme know if I can help, at the rate this state is growing I should be trying to sell people on other states but what can I say :) Arizona has the highest-per-capita beer consumption rate as a result of all of our lovely backyard bbq's we're always having, we love having fun in the sun in AZ :)

OMG thank you so much. I really appreciate your response! I will prob pm you soon. Lets see, I know I realized after I posted I didn't put which university. My fiencee wants to attend ASU in Tempe for their landscape architecture degree. My mom and sister are moving to AZ too to work for US Airlines. I have no idea what part of town that is in, they will be in the offices not the actual airport. I have no kids just a dog. Hes small and and doesnt cause any damage. We are looking for realatively cheap rent and don't mind being in the college campus area (in fact the closer to the school the better). I don't mind commuting a hospital but i dont want to drive to to far...we only have one car at the moment. Reasonable rent to me would be 700/mo and under (no studios though), atleast at first until I know what I will be making and eventually i'd like to rent a house with a backyard and I know that will cost much more than 700/mo lol.

I was looking into the banner health systems just bc ive seen ads for them. I honestly have no pref. about what area I work in. Id love to find a hospital that offers relocation reimbursement. I have the most experience in peds (although i will be a new grad) but really ill go where ever has the best atmoshphere, benefits and pay.

So I hear its super hot in AZ in the summer but its a dry heat. Living here in Cincinnati the humidity is awful and the mosquitos are terrible...I think I could stand the dry heat vs. humidity any day! All the pics ive seen of phoenix are so pretty, very clean and modern!

Hah, I tend to agree with you there. I was looking at the new photos of our freeway (the SanTan 202) and when you’re out here on “soft-asphalt” highways, your car will feel like a LEXUS because it’s so quiet, it’s wonderful :)

Having done business recently near the LA Area in Cali (Inland Empire more specifically), it’s amazing how beautiful AZ’s architecture and modern designs are. The streets are better maintained, the buildings in general are newer, and Arizona still has time before it REALLY “explodes” so the planning you can tell is there, in at least some aspects – we’re rapidly trying NOT to become the next LA (read: one big snarling mess of cars, people, and people IN cars).

It does get hot and because of the drought, it’ll likely get hotter, but that’s the ebb and flow things. The South East gets more hurricanes, we get a couple of degrees – all things in moderation I suppose :)

There are tons of places that’ll fit your budget around ASU, as it’s predominantly students and the rents are about that for a 1 bedroom – you can probably even get a 2 bedroom for a few bucks over 700. Last time I checked, Apts4Rent.com, Rent.com, and some other sites were helpful with rents, virtual tours, etc. The night life in this area is AMAZING, so there are plenty of places to have some fun at.

You can rent a house in the Tempe area for around 900 or so. Probably get about 1200-1600 sq ft, decent backyard (Tempe has nice-sized backyards in most places), garage, etc.

Tempe is also the hub that’s right in the middle of the SouthEast Valley (Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert) and the NorthWest Valley (Phoenix, Scottsdale, etc.) so that should put you smack dab in the middle of some good commutes – there’s also plenty of bus access if needed, though I’d avoid it if possible.

I wouldn’t be able to speak about the hospitals nearby but there are several that would be less than a 15-20 mile drive.

If you move out of Tempe to pursue more of a “suburb” life, I can’t recommend Gilbert enough. Especially with the new freeway out here, we’re getting the FIRST of what the other parts of town (west side for example) will be getting in 5-10 years, so it’s a great place to get both solid transportation AND a great home life. Once the other half of the freeway kicks in, the west side (Glendale, buckeye, Goodyear, etc.) will be more desirable but they currently face QUITE the transportation issue as they don’t have a ton of freeways out there yet.

Keep us posted on what ya plan to do. Many of the nurses here are so accommodating it’s ridiculous :)

That is so good to hear! I am so excited to move. My fiencee may move out before me bc the earlier he gets there the sooner we will qualify for in state tuition. I grad. techically May 13th but bc my school is so small we can only have one graduation, bachelors and masters. The BSN students will be done done in May but we get to walk and go back for another 12 weeks...6 of a class and then 6 weeks of our preceptorship.

How many pediatric hospitals are out there? Here in Cincy we only have one (besides Shriners) and so the pay here for Peds is ridiculously low.

Im glad to hear the nightlife is good, i can't wait to have a social life again:) My nursing school has really sucked the life out of me lately. My sister and I are around the same age so she will be glad to hear that, shes 22 and im 25. I hear the job market for RNs is great out there...much better than here anyway. If anyone could just list some hospitals for me so I can look then up id be so greatful!!!!

We decided a long time ago that rather than an apartment we would rent a house, possibly in Gilbert, Anthem or some other suburb of Phoenix.

The company I'm going with keep trying to push us into an apartment but with two older children have stood my ground and insisted we want a house to rent.

Gilberdaddy have you any idea when the hospital is opening near you and what kind of hospital it will be? it will be interesting to find out.

Just a caution- Anthem is SUPER DUPER expensive!!!

I live in Anthem and rent is the same as anywhere else in Phoenix-I dont find it expensive. The house prices have dropped round here at the moment.

It's important to remember too though, that rent prices are fairly controlled. For example, most houses rarely go above 1,000 because they end up pricing themselves out of the market.

As one person said on the evening tv last night while talking about her 950/month luxury apartment, "Once you get over $1,000/month it's pointless to rent, that's about the price of a mortgage payment".

Either way, a quick visit to realtor.com or another real estate site (Craigslist.com is another site to check for homes for sale) should show the difference.

If it's true that Anthem is becoming priced more on par with it's competition, that's just good news in general. Anthem has some amazing ammenities to their homeowners.

Although, they're also lacking a nice big freeway to help shorten those huge commutes.

By the way, while we're on the topic of home prices falling, here are some interesting articles I found the other day that may be of interest :)
