hi. i am a new male nurse and got a job opportunity in phoenix arizona - they want me to work at st. joseph hospital at 24 dollars per hour... do you think that will be suitable for my everyday life?
i want to know more about phoenix arizona, its crime rates and standard of living. is transportation easily accessible? i would love to talk to someone who is living in phoenix arizona and is currently working. thanks.. Private Message me, please.
Yeah along the "Baseline Corridor" as they call it (the area along south mountain), they're rapidly growing. I was actually going to be part of a VIP owned RE/MAX franchise, so I got to know VIP pretty well - I like their homes.
It is funny about what you said in phoenix. Drive around central for example and it's terrible, then you get into a pocket where it's all older, large, million+ dollar homes and then back to crappy ville lol.
I grew up in East Mesa and then moved to West mesa later and west definitely has more crime due to being older, cheaper to live in, etc.
I'm half hispanic and when going to school in Tempe, I had plenty of hispanic friends. There was actually a report saying that for children under 18 in Arizona, white children are actually the minority now!! I'd say overall that Arizona is pretty culture-friendly since we're so diverse.
Wow, everyone's been busy on this thread . I can comment on both elementary schools and high schools as I have kids in both. One of my dd's goes to Gilbert High School and the other one goes to Higley High. I had a ds who went to Mesquite for a year (boundaries changed after first year) so I can tell you about all three of these schools. My favorite by far, is Higley. It's a smaller high school so more of a home town feel. My dd has gotten to know everybody there and all the teachers and staff know her by name. My other dd goes to Gilbert High and it's so large she's basically lost in the shuffle. For her that's okay, for my other dd it wasn't, that's why she's going to Higley, she does better in a small school. When my ds went to Mesquite I know there were a lot of problems with 'gangs'. Hard to believe, since it's in a pretty nice area, but maybe they're wanna be gangs, either way they cause a lot of problems. You also have groups of minorities, meaning instead of mixing they form little gangs. That's not really the atmosphere I wanted my kids to be around. My dd who goes to Higley, is good friends with an African princess, and cowboys, and Mexicans...you get the point.
Now for elementary schools.
After watching my older kids go through our local elementary school I decided to put my 7yo in a charter school. When my older kids were in school there were over 30 kids per class, it was insane. My dd goes to Edu-Prize, located at Baseline and Stapley, and the class size is limited to 20 students PLUS there's always at least one parent in the classroom helping. They like the parents to volunteer 80 hours a year. That doesn't mean you have to go to the school, they understand if you're working or whatever, but you can always do things at home, or send in supplies, whatever you can do to help the school. This means that the parents are VERY involved in their children's education, and it's just been a fantastic experience. They teach to each child's capacity, so that a classroom or a child isn't held back because of the material.
I don't remember who it was who had the 8yo in England, but if he wanted to email my dd that would be fine. She can tell him about school.
I do want to warn anyone considering moving here that summer is an experience. Children can't really play outside, it's too hot. The only thing they can really do is swim in the mornings, so instead of seeing the streets filled with children in the summer, it's like a ghost town....

Your experience with Mesquite sounds about right, the neighborhood brought me to think it may be that way
The summers are DEF that hot! Although, if you're in the Gilbert area, there is a gym nearby called LifeTime fitness. 2 stories, 2 olympic size swimming pools, one indoor and one outdoor, a slide, 2 full size basketball courts, and a rock climbing wall. We had a family pack for all 4 of us for 100/month. When you just want to get out it's GREAT and the daycare there is HUGE and will watch the lil ones for TWO HOURS!!
Mommy can sit in the spa while they're having a blast playing on the daycares computers and playing in their McD's like play area (it's something like 1500 sq ft!!!).
Just an idea, it'll keep them fit, give you some exposure to a nice gym, and it's a great way to spend a hot summer :)
We dont' go there anymore, but it was just so freaking cool I always recommend it - my daughter liked the daycare more than her own house!
Here in Anthem you get all the community facilities included in your rent and for a one off payment of $50. There is a waterslide, swimmingpool, Gym, climbing wall, tennis courts, basketball you name it it is here and child care for 2 hours but that costs $2. Also there is pre school and kindergarden facilities.
There is also a large park which has big slides for the kiddies and a little steam train which is brill.
If you own the property then you pay community fees of $75 per month.
This is such a great thread! Lots of info for those of us coming over from UK. I wondered in anyone has dealt with a rental company called Home America? We are coming over to phoenix later this year to look at different areas to rent (I have accepted a job at Boswell memorial in sun city), could anyone advise me if this company is OK to deal with? The houses on their website look great and I was planning to contact them prior to coming over, if anyone can give me advice on area's nearby that are family friendly I would be really grateful
There are hundreds of real estate agents around and over here it is so different. They are able to show you the houses because each house has a lock box which contains a key, allowing entry to the house. Then when you find a house your real estate agent deals with the landlords real estate agent-it is so bizare but you get used to the differences quite quickly. I didnt negociate my rent but have been told since I could have done. Your rental agreement will be invaluble to you in the first few weeks of entry in to the country and while you are waiting for your social security number and driving licence, it will be your proof and only proof of residency.

How inexpensive are you looking for because I doubt if there is anything less than $1000 a month in Scottsdale

I don't know how expensive they are, but for folks working near downtown and not wanting to deal with I-10/202/60 traffic VIP homes has the answer. I heard a radio advertisement and they are located at the base of South Mtn and claim "custom homes for tract home prices." I'd guess that area could have a few issues with crime and a not so good school district.
