have you started becoming anal about things?

I HAVE!!

Im a member of another message board (not nursing related) and right now they are having the abortion debate (which I think is a ridiculous topic to argue because no one is going to change their views and everyone just gets upset because they arent changing peoples minds...inevitably, though, this topic comes up every few months by new members.)

At any rate, I have been following peoples comments/arguments and some of the things that they say drive me crazy!! ("30% of people who have abortions die from complications", "many women carry ectopic pregnancies to full term with no ill effects", etc.) I seriously think they just make things up that support their argument and call it common medical knowledge. I was thinking about it today and I realized how much more anal Ive become since I have been a nursing student. Even the little things drive me crazy and I fight the urge to correct people because I dont want to be rude. ("lar-nyx" instead of "larynx" is one that I hear all the time at work and I cant STAND IT!!) :chuckle

Ok, don't think I come from a family of total freaks. My mother considers herself to be an

expert on sexual matters. One evening we were having a conversation. Well, she went on

and on about the merits of watching "forno" movies with my husband. She went on to repeat herself about five times throughout our conversation. I just wanted to say, " Yeah Mom, the word is Mediao." She still says it, and I just die laughing.

Too Funny!! :rotfl:

Working out at Curves recently I noticed two signs with "Congradulations" written on them . . . . . I HAD to fix them. I couldn't help myself.

In regards to orientate . . . "I was orientated to the unit today" . . that always bugged me. Sounds almost obscene. But I looked it up and it is a word. It still sounds wrong though. Please just say I was oriented to the unit today.

I have to admit that saying fibula and tibia together takes some thought though . . . . even though I know what the bones are saying fibula sort of sets you up to say tibula . . . :)

The only thing I have always been anal about is grammar and spelling. However, my family is from Arkansas and Oklahoma and I love the way they talk. It makes life interesting.

I'm soooooooo glad I'm not the only one who gets irritated at these little, naggy things........I've ALWAYS been anal about spelling and grammar!

One thing that bugs me, which I haven't seen mentioned here yet, is the substitution of an "sh" sound for what's supposed to be an "s".......as in "shtreet". And it's not "LENTH" or "STRENTH" (Shtrenth?), it's LENGTH and STRENGTH!! For me, hearing those pronounced the wrong way is like being treated to a concert featuring fingernails on a chalkboard........AAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!! :(

My ex could never say "idea", he always said "ideal" when he meant "idea" . It drove me nuts. I would say it 10-15 times in a row and he could never get it out. We have been divorced for 12 years and I still laugh when I hear either of those words!! :rotfl: :o

I can't believe no one mentioned "your" for you're. I see it multiple times on this board. Being a medical transcriptionist, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Number one on my list (that I absolutely cannot let go - have to correct) is

hot water heater. Why would you heat hot water?? It is a water heater.

I had a co-worker who would always say "You never seem to amaze me", which totally negates what I think she's trying to say. The word is cease, woman, CEASE!

My boyfriend likes to torture me by saying "irregardless".

And people who "could care less" about something. Um, okay. I know contractions can be tricky, but the expression is "couldn't care less".

Thank you, I feel better for having gotten that off my chest.

there's a guy in my anatomy class who says "orifick" for orifice. ahhhh! and sooo many people do the prostrate/prostate thing as well.

Just had to laugh - when I took my son to speech therapy yesterday, I took a closer look at one of the notices they've posted. They wrote HIPPA too :chuckle I never noticed before because I didn't realize it was HIPAA till I read this thread but being a medical office, THEY should know better

As a former professional writer turned nurse, you can bet grammar and pronunciation are my pet peeves! I cringed when my nursing instructor pronounced "Hippocrates" as "hippo - crates" (as in boxes for hippos). How about 'reNember' for 'remember'? This from a friend who is a police officer! Drives me NUTS! Even caught the local PBS station saying "cally - ope" for calliope! And let's not even get into some of the nursing errors! 'Tenent' for tendon???? Ducosate for docusate....Yep, I'm anal to the Nth degree...and proud of it!:p

I am anal about somethings but this would not be one of them. The way someone who pronounces a word may be due to difficulties to hear the way it is correctly pronounced. I have two children with hearing disabilities who work very hard to say "S" instead of "SH" before and after words. What may be annoying to you is probably more of an annoyance to the person trying to speak correctly.
