1st time dui... Any advice will help..

Nurses Criminal

Published

On January 12th I was pulled over for swerving and suspected of drinking. I refused to blow into a breathalyzer because I had been drinking while I was out golfing with a few friends. I did not cause an accident or injury. I was eventually arrested and here I am today.. I'm an lpn, nurse manager and have been working as a nurse for 4 years. I haven't drank a beer since this occurrence and have sworn to not again. Please do not scold me as I have been through enough and spend every night panicking that I will lose my license and livelihood.. I just want to know if anyone has experience here in Florida or knows anyone else who has had a DUI conviction (guilty) with no prior history of any criminal activity and has kept their license with no interruption. I know if I am found guilty I must self report and I will as I have talked to a nurse lawyer but I don't know how long my case will take till the verdict... Please if anyone has information let me know if the fl Bon has done in the past with a situation like mine. I immediately told my administrator and direct boss and my job is secure. I am just very worried about the board... Thank you for any help.

Could you ask the RN attorney about that? Perhaps s/he would know.

Drinking and driving are considered a risk to public health. Guilty or not the BON requires self reports of any legal charges. Consult with your attorney and actually look at your state regulatory mailing for listing of licenses in jeopardy. Count how many are dui related.

I am sorry you are going through this...follow the advice of your attorney.

I would also suggest not posting on social media sites .

Just go figure that if boards of nursing took everyones license for every dui charge employers would have a MUCH harder time staffing than they now do. Not saying it is good to have dui but looks like you are doing what they want you to do and you apparently have an attorney looking out for you so try not to worry too much. This too will pass.

You will have to self report and they will most likely put probations on your license. However the fact that your employer is willing to work with you is a great thing. From what I know protect yourself. I have always been told the BON is not your friend.
