1ST Semester Nursing Student

This is my first semester too in Nursing. I would first say try to relax, stay focused in class, don't get behind on the reading material. It does seem kinda overwelming at first, a lot is thrown at us, you will make it !!

Hi, a fellow nursing student here. I am beginning my RN year of my program. Advice I can give is to not procrastinate. Also, you will learn about time management. Take what you learn for managing time in clinicals and apply it to your life. All about priorities. Also, if an instructor assigns a paper at the beginning of the quarter and posts an example and the guidelines for that paper, do it at the beginning of the quarter. I am not a great student, but I make A's and B's and am considered one of the strongest students in my class. I have two young kids and had to learn these techniques the hard way. I just graduated in May, so nursing school is still fresh in my memory. Try not to get discouraged. Everyone will have bad days in clinical or class, just stay focused on your goals and think positively. Good luck!:)

Hey! CONGRATS and yes..a journey it will be. Remain positive, eager..read, read ,read and always ask..how, what, when where,and why.

Learn to listen to your instinct, listen to your patients. Find a study mate, make time for yourself. A mentor would be great if you can find one.

There will be ups and downs. Linger on the ups and fastforward the downs. Reevaluate and assess yourself and your patients FREQUENTLY..In school I couldnt understand at first why Nursing was referred to as an ART. I DO NOW...and you will to..BEST OF LUCK and my prayers to you!!!

Hi it's me again...Thanks for your responses =). I know I have my weaknesses...and unfortunetly procrasting was one of them, but I working on it. I just thought I'd stop by here once, but come to think of it, I might need this more often. Your advices mean more than you think. So, I hope to KIT with many of you and someday I'll be able to post, "I made it!" Best wishes to all of you.

My hubby was on the waiting list in an RN program for 2 years. So, for the last 2 years he took all of the pre-requisites and then some. This month he finally started taking his nursing clinicals. The 3rd day of class, he came home and said, "I don't think I can do this." "I don't want to do this." Indecision is a terrible thing! Enjoy the first clinicals. Your classmates are your support group. There isn't much that you can do wrong, but stay safe, as well as your client, and you'll do well. You have my best wishes!

As for my hubby...he's looking into what else he can go into now. I just want him to get done so I don't have to work 60 hours a week anymore! I have to give you guys credit. But honestly, male nurses tend to move ahead faster than others! Good luck!

Everyone has given you some very good advice. Take a deep breath. Nursing school was one of the hardest things I have done in my life but just take 1 day at a time. You will never read every page of your Med Surg books but try to hit the highlights. Every class will make you feel that theirs is the most important. Try to have fun every so often because you will make it. :) I graduated in 1986 & can't believe I have been doing this so long. Sometimes I am stressed to the max but have never thought of leaving this proffession. Good luck to you!

I am also first semester RN cores... One of the things that I find so difficult is the amount of videos we are to watch. Of course these are only available in the skills lab, so I will be putting in a lot of extra time there just WATCHING TV!!

The total load for the first 3 weeks fills a 3 inch binder (that is just notes, syllabi and manual). Then there is all the reading from the two books and the journals they have assigned, literally 100's and 100's of pages.

How the h*ll do they expect us to learn ALL of that in a mere 3 weeks!!! I would have to either read the notes, the journals, the books or watch videos every hour of every day to even get through the material! And to actually LEARN it all?

Sigh... all I need is a 70 to pass and I am just going to read / study / watch videos as much as I can and HOPE I can pick up enough to score 70 out of 100 questions come next Friday
