St. Peter's University Hospital Internship

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I moved to NJ after getting my BSN and passing the NCLEX. As most people know, the job market is tough. St. Peters University Hospital had an open house for New Grad RN's and they offered me an internship. The internship is unpaid, and they may or may not offer me a job at the end of the 6-8weeks. The nursing recruiter said that the hospital has a two part med math exam. Part one is med math and part two is pharmacology. I have no idea how many questions there are but I do know that I have to score at least and 85 on each part. I am trying to keep in mind that I am only a new grad and they can't expect me to be a walking drug guide, but my anxiety is getting the best of me. Has anybody had a New Grad Internship here that could shed some light on the pharmacology part of this exam?

Sincerely,

a very anxious new grad

I am SO glad I found this thread! I am a new grad and was accepted into Saint Peter's internship program for the surgical unit. I'm very excited but am anxious about this medication test. I take it this upcoming thursday and have really been trying to study. I'm more worried about the pharmacology part - particularly the dosages and trade vs. generic. I've been looking at my pharmacology textbook from school but can anyone who has taken this exam shed some light on this?!

PS: Congrats to everyone who has been accepted and has passed the exam!!

I looked up around 3 of the most important drugs from each category and memorized them. A lot of it was stuff I remembered from nursing school so I think my program prepared me really well. You'll be fine! Congrats :) are you starting sept 14? That's my start date

Thanks for your advice! Congrats to you. Yes that's when I would be starting if I pass the med exam. Just trying to stay calm and positive!

Don't stress yourself out! If you fail the first time at least you'll have a better idea of what to study the second time! Let me know how it goes !

I have an internship on the surgical unit also! :) I failed the first time around. Review ACLS drugs and their uses. Look up dosages for major drugs and memorize them (I used my drug book, it was less confusing than the pharm textbook). Memorize generic and trade names of common drugs. Everything else were major points they stressed in school and came back pretty quickly. I passed the second time no problem! Good luck!

I used my drug book also! Def look at that as it's less confusing and hits the major points. Also know very impt side effects (obv there's a lot for every drug but if there's one that stands out write it down)

Hello I live in NJ too and I'm looking where can I apply residency. Good thing I found this thread! Any tips how can I get in the residency program? I'm a BSN-RN

does anyone still read this thread? I hope so! I am testing tomorrow for a new hire. I have done Pediatrics for the last 3.5 years so cardiac meds aren't my thing. I've read up on all the ACLS meds and i know pediatric antibiotics like amp/gent.. but was hoping for some guidance.

Anyone still read this post. I'm looking into applying for the position. I too am reluctant since it's not a guaranteed employment.Does anyone know other new grad programs?

I know Atlantic Health System and Saint Barnabas both offer a new grad program. JFK has a nurse residency program. I think Robertwood has some kind of new grad program for the OR, but not sure about other areas. Hope this is helpful :)

When I graduated, I interviewed with several of the above hospitals and ended up going with the internship at St. Peter's. I don't regret it, it's an awesome environment to work in. Apply everywhere and do what's best for you! Good luck.

Hi,

I apologize for the super late response being that my semester was hectic and I never saw your response. Thank you for your advice and additional info. I just graduated in may. Please I was just offered the internship as well. I would like to know how you liked it. I would appreciate any information that you can give me also any advice on the med math and pharmacology.

Are there any new Interns or former interns. As a 2017 graduate I would like to hear how the program was for you.

Thanks!
