I moved to NJ after getting my BSN and passing the NCLEX. As most people know, the job market is tough. St. Peters University Hospital had an open house for New Grad RN's and they offered me an internship. The internship is unpaid, and they may or may not offer me a job at the end of the 6-8weeks. The nursing recruiter said that the hospital has a two part med math exam. Part one is med math and part two is pharmacology. I have no idea how many questions there are but I do know that I have to score at least and 85 on each part. I am trying to keep in mind that I am only a new grad and they can't expect me to be a walking drug guide, but my anxiety is getting the best of me. Has anybody had a New Grad Internship here that could shed some light on the pharmacology part of this exam?
So happy to have found this thread! I have the pharm test on thursday 5/28 ans super nervous. Any tips of what to focus on for M/S? HR told me I'm looking at a July 6 start date for the M/S float pool and any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
If you don't mind my asking, how much do they hire you at after you finished the internship? I realize it's probably different working per diem, just looking for a ball park.
Hi all. I was just offered an internship last week. Not sure if this is helpful but I was told that new grads start at 30/hour without shift diff, weekend pay etc. Per diem pay is higher, starting at 40/hour. The recruiter told me that over 90% of interns are offered positions. The ones who haven't been offered spots were people who were clearly unsafe or some other extreme reason. I will be interning on the surgical unit, right now all they have open is per diem. The recruiter said if a full-time or part-time opens up, it will usually go to per diems. Hope this helps!
Congrats! She told me the same thing and said that it's very unlikely if hired per diem we will go very long without being offered full time. I'm in the emergency department starting sept 12. I'm so nervous for the pharm test I feel like I have no idea what to review!
Me too! I take it Thursday. I've been reviewing powerpoints from school for the past week and am going to seriously study today and tomorrow. We'll see!
Ahh good luck let me know how it is! I take it next Thursday I'll prob start studying Monday.. I think I might just google important drug dosages for nurses etc bc that's one thing I def don't feel confident with we never went over dosages in nursing school! Hoping it'll be very general -_-
So, just like everyone else I passed the calculations portion and failed the pharm. The nurse educator went over it with me. I would look over the most common med from each category and learn it. Make sure your confident with drug and trade names and dosages. I failed because I messed up a whole matching section. It really wasn't that bad. Good luck!!
Ahhh! Well at least you passed the med calc! The dosages is the part I'm confused about I've never heard of having to know dosages so I guess I'll just wing the first one. I take it on Thursday I'll let you know how it goes !
Hi everyone! I was just told about the internship from the recruiter and am so happy I found this thread!!!
Could any of you who completed the internship and are now working (or are in the process of completing the internship) share your experiences? Do you feel the 6-8 week unpaid internship was worth what you gained? What is the process like? Did you feel like by doing the internship you were able to more smoothly learn the ropes before starting?
what units did you have wonderful experiences on...and (hopefully none) anyone have issues with their unit being not receptive to new grads?
Also, do they let you know what pay would be once the internship is done and if you are hired as a PD or full time? I'm just trying to get any info that I can.... thank you in advance and congratulations to everyone!!!!!!!!

Have you received a job offer after completion of the internship? I go for an interview on Monday and interested how it all works out.
