St. Peter's University Hospital Internship

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I moved to NJ after getting my BSN and passing the NCLEX. As most people know, the job market is tough. St. Peters University Hospital had an open house for New Grad RN's and they offered me an internship. The internship is unpaid, and they may or may not offer me a job at the end of the 6-8weeks. The nursing recruiter said that the hospital has a two part med math exam. Part one is med math and part two is pharmacology. I have no idea how many questions there are but I do know that I have to score at least and 85 on each part. I am trying to keep in mind that I am only a new grad and they can't expect me to be a walking drug guide, but my anxiety is getting the best of me. Has anybody had a New Grad Internship here that could shed some light on the pharmacology part of this exam?

Sincerely,

a very anxious new grad

Abrillant12- When they called me and told me I passed the test they then scheduled and appointment for me to come in to HR to fill out paper work and get a physical. You get like a letter and it tells you that the first week will be orientation and stuff.

Hey guys!! I just got the internship too and have to take those tests this Thursday. Can you guys tell me what they mean about matching the strength to the medication? Where did you study from for that? Also how many questions can I expect? Thanks :)

I believe is was 20 med math and 40 pharmacology questions. Make sure you know the trade vs. generic and be able to match it with the typical dose of that medication. I didn't know how to study for it so I took my pharmacology textbook from college and went through all 2000 pages of it to find medication that I had heard of before and their typical doses. :/ sorry. I know thats not much help.

I'm half done with my internship! I'm hoping the new year will bring good news!! :cat:

Okay thanks for the advice! Wish me luck! And congrats, I hope for you also :)

Hey! So I'm studying and looking at the dosages for each med. but they are different for the different problems. Like nitrates I have a general 5-40 mg per day. I'm not sure if I'm looking over the right things! Help lol

Hey everyone any updates? I am considering this internship but I really am curious if any of you was accepted a position/ how your experience was?

Hi guys!!! ok so aced the calcultions part but have to retake pharm!! ugh seems like thats the pattern. How is the retake?? My first test had a lot of emergency meds like atropine/lidocaine etc and a question about tall man lettering! I would appreciate any feedback...thanks!

hi DorothyRN, any updates on the internship? would love to know how the program was and if you were hired. thanks!

so I have finished the internship and was hired per diem. I'm not sure how everybody else turned out but I do think a fair number were offered jobs. best of luck to you.

Hi girls, I just learned about this internship but can't find any information online. I just recently graduated with my ADN, got my license and have been taking BSN classes. I know they only hire BSN nurses when applying for a job. Do you need to have your BSN when applying for the internship as well? And if an ADN and RN are enough, how do i go about applying? TIA!!!

I don't really have a straight up answer for that. I feel like it may depend on the unit directors personal preference. The floor I work on, Tele and ICU, won't hire unless you already have a BSN. However, I do feel as though I've heard of a few ADNs who are working on their BSN getting hired on other floors. Your best bet would be to call the nursing recruiter and ask how it works.
