St pete college fall 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello,

I have read previous posts on here over the last few months regarding admission to SPC's AS Nursing program. I applied for the fall 2013 semester. Are there any applicants out there who also applied? I am playing the waiting game. Do any previous applicants know how long it takes to hear if you are accepted or not, once the application window closes? Thank you:)

Hi lcujunel7,

Piggy backing on what chris0003 said, notifications will be sent out starting July 1. Per the nursing application verification email, it stated that the evaluation period was May 16-June 30, with notifications going out after that period.

I swear, July can't come fast enough :-) Although, I certainly hope they go through evaluations quicker this time around... This anticipation is insane.

Good luck everyone.

Hi RNS2B_2013,

I couldn't agree more! The waiting and wondering keeps me up at night...LOL! Do you have all your prerequisites done too?

Hey Chris,

yes, i have all of the prereqs completed. Just finished with Micro in Spring. Did you apply anywhere else or through any other programs (i.e. Baycare's EAYL)?

No RN2B_2013, I haven't. I really don't want to lock myself into a 2 year contract after nursing school. Have you? I do know a few people that have applied. Most of them have opted to go that way because their GPA's aren't where they need to get into SPC using the point system. EAYL a good program and a great alternative though. I've heard the interview process is interesting.

Yes, i applied to the EAYL program as well as through SPC directly. I just finished my 2nd interview with them this week. Supposedly after these, they will be making a decision. Once again, playing the waiting game here as well :nailbiting:

The 2 year contract did not bother me. I looked at it as a guaranteed job after graduation, plus another avenue to get in to into the program. I feel I have a competitive GPA but i have read horror stories here of people with high GPAs still not getting in. So its just a matter of waiting for the official word from SPC and/or Baycare.

How's Micro going? Who are you taking it with?

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Friendly staff concern: per our terms of service, to which you all agreed, we do not allow the naming of instructors. This is to protect their privacy.

BTW the more anonymous you are on the Internet, the better.

I check my email an embarrassing number of times and check allnurses.com daily for “Breaking News”. This anticipation is absolutely killing me! From the information I have gathered from many other posts it looks like in Fall 2012 applicants were notified around June 15th. I hope that is the case for this year as well because I am not sure if I can make it to July 1st. :nailbiting:

Most of the hopefuls I have talked with have a specialty already in mind. I have several interests in mind but I am not sold completely on one. I am hoping to find my area of true passion through schooling and experience. Does anyone else feel the same or do you already know what avenue you would like to take your career?

Does anyone care to share their GPA (for the program requirements) and what they think their chances of getting in are? Mine is 3.88 (all classes complete) my adviser was very positive about my chances and so was I. However, after reading several postsabout persons with higher GPAs getting alternate positions or rejected, I have lost most of that confidence.

Hi SKFord,

Same here, I truly hope they are ahead of schedule in sending out notifications this year. July 1 seems like an eternity at this point. Regarding a specialty, I have a few in mind that I have researched and at this point "think" I would like to pursue. Although, I as well am allowing for schooling, clinicals and real life exposure in those different areas to shed more light and make a more sound decision in choosing a specialty.

My prereq GPA is a 3.87 (all classes completed). While I feel I have a competitive GPA, there have been cases I've read which people have not gotten in with higher GPAs. I can't say i have lost confidence, but the wait and having you life "on hold" is what is most frustrating.

I feel like i will receive an alert from either AllNurses about checking in so much for an update from other SPC hopefuls or from my phone from refreshing the inbox so often to see if an email has come through :nailbiting:.

I have a 3.88 and all classes completed, too. I went back and re-read the thread for Fall 2012 and noticed that the people who claimed to have high GPAs that weren't admitted all had some other issue that they didn't realize. I think one person thought they had a 4.0 and didn't get in, but it turns out they had a W in the speech class which kept them out initially. So I think if you're absolutely sure there are no hidden obstacles you can have faith in your GPA.

I actually visited HEC counselors on four separate occasions to make sure my application was complete. I have a prior BA in Communications which waives the requirement to take English 101 and Speech Communication. Every counselor assured me that they'd see my BA in my record and adjust my points accordingly, but I'm still concerned that some glitch will happen and I initially won't get in because it looks like I'm missing two required classes.

I think a 3.88 will be good enough. That was the average with the Fall 2012 class, which of course means that many people admitted had a significantly lower GPA than 3.88 (taking into account a lot of people who apply have a 4.0).

Also, I noticed today that MySPC will be down for maintenance on June 15 so don't rely on being able to check your student email through it. I set up a redirect on my student mail this morning so now I get messages in my Yahoo mail account as well.

Highwaygirl

I am in the same boat as you. I have a BA psychology that waives those classes as well. I never thought about asking the HEC adviser how they figure that into the GPA. She did tell me that my GPA for the program was 3.88 however I had a B in Comp I so I wonder if she plugged that into the GPA calculator. I would think that they would not score your quality points on the waived classes and then just divide by 24 total credits instead of 30. Oh I hope that is what they do because that would increase my GPA to 3.958 (according to GPA calculator), Woohooo!

Good news on the others having other circumstances affecting their admission other than the GPA. I have been to HEC several times and as far as know everything is in line for admission. I did however have a bad experience with an adviser that is no longer there at the start of my pre-req journey (she gave me a lot of incorrect information). The adviser I have seen on my resent visits has been extremely helpful.

I have my e-mail forwarded as well but if you are like me and want to check from the source, just to make sure, you can also access the student mail through skydrive.live.com.

So happy to here I am not the only one. Thanks for the reply. :nurse:

According to the counselor I saw, if you have taken the class - and it sounds like you did actually take Comp - then they will use the grade you received in the class. My situation is slightly different in that I never took Comp 101 at all - I had AP English in high school so when I went to college the first time, I started with Comp 102 (I had AP credit that covered for 101). So I have no grade in Comp 101 for the school to use. The counselor told me I'd get full credit/points for the two classes I'm waiving, I just won't have a grade for them figured into my prereq GPA.

In the end, that hurt me a little because it made my one B (in a psychology course I transferred in) bring my GPA down more than it would have if I had another two As to figure in.

I haven't worked much with Skydrive (other than changing the temp password) but I get an error trying to access email from it. The system doesn't accept the Office 365 account they switched everyone to. How are you making it work?

Oh, as for specialities - I want to work with either cancer patients or underserved populations (low-income, homeless, etc.) in an advocacy role helping them access and navigate the health care system. Most other students I talk to want to work in a hospital, and that really doesn't appeal to me at all!
