Hi everyone!

I accepted a position with St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, CA. I will be relocating from the bay area. Anyone have any ideas on where to live? A nice safe area?

Just looking for a studio or 1 bedroom apartment. Please let me know. Thanks!

CONGRATS!!!!! I lived in the Arcata/Eureka area for 6 years, but that was in the 90's. :) It's a gorgeous area, and the hospital was very nice. (I only saw the ER and lobby.)

There are a ton of apartment areas around, and a lot of houses have been transformed into apartments, too, which is always a nice way to go. There are lots of older, gorgeous homes that are now apartments. :)

You can also look in the town of Arcata if you don't see anything you like in Eureka. It's only 7-10 miles from Eureka, and traffic shouldn't be too bad during "nursing hours". It's a college town, though, so be careful of anything really near the University. Noise, noise, noise.

You can start by looking right around the hospital. Wouldn't it be nice to just walk there? Also, an idea would be to call the local police department and ask them if there are any areas you should avoid. It's been 15 years since I was there. lol

Again, congrats. I'm SO very happy for you!!!!! Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to PM me anytime. :)

Thank so much for your reply Coriander! I think I remember your screen name from other threads. Scripps? Sharp? If I remember right you were able to secure a position with Sharp! Congratulations to you!

I can't tell you how thankful I am that you replied! I've been reading about Eureka and the reviews/comments have been terrible! Pot/Meth very prevalent there. I will definitely contact the police department to find out areas to avoid.

I will have to PM you so we can talk. I'd really appreciate that! Thanks again.

Yes, I am at Sharp :) Thank you!!

Pot and other drugs have always been an issue up there. HOWEVER, it's an extremely beautiful area with ocean on one side and the gorgeous mountains and snow on the other. Visit the area of Willow Creek as well as the Lady Bird Johnson Redwood Grove in Orick when you can. My favorite place in the world is that Grove! Crescent City is a really lovely town, too.

I lived all over Eureka, and found that I felt most comfortable on the North end. Down near Broadway/101 was kind of sketchy, but that may have changed.

I hope you like rain!! I lived there for 3 years, recently moved away. When I was in school I lived in Arcata. There's cute places to live there, everything is walking distance pretty much, full of hippies and wannabes. Eureka is where I liked living. I'd recommend Cutten only area. There's tons of sketch places near Broadway and 101. Don't leave any valuables in your car, mine got broken into a bunch. It's a depressed area, pot, the hospital, and HSU are the only income jobs for people. Good luck get your experience and get out!! I was hired as a new grad there and left after only 1yr on a 2yr contact. They didn't make me pay the difference fyi.

Yes! =)

krazievi3t6url I hope everything is going good for you so far! St. Josephs has opened up a position for Versant New Grad Residency that I will be applying to. Just wanted to know if you had any suggestions for landing a job there? I have the name of the manager for the unit I am applying to. I was going to attempt to contact via email. Any suggestions would be great! Do you mind also sharing your experience so far? I graduated in Jan licensed in end of Feb. Have my PALS and ACLS. Three years of lvn experience. I am currently living in southern CA. I have family in Eureka though and love it up there.

Hi Holly,

Sounds like you are definitely qualified. I also applied and waiting to hear.

Did either of you ladies hear anything yet? I interview there next Tuesday. Krazivi3t6url please let me know if you have any words of wisdom.

Yes, I interview on Tuesday as well. I can't wait to visit the area.
