2020 Spring SMU ABSN program

Published

Hey guys! wanted to start a tread for SMU ABSN program! Feel free to post any questions, updates or vent as this is a stressful time for all of us! Best of luck to you all!

Does anyone know if/when we need a physical exam? I also read something about the vision exam, but I'm not sure if we need that either.

I believe we do need the physical exam. When I submitted my immunizations, they replied with a message saying that the ABSN program did require the physical. ? I'm not sure about the color-vision exam, but I did it just in case.

@Jennywho If you have facebook, join our group. Search 'Samuel Merritt ABSN - Sacramento Spring 2020' I'm trying to find out that info too.

Unless something has changed from the previous cohort, a physical exam is required.

Hi there.

Did anybody on this round get accepted w/ one prerequisite "In Progress?"

I'm thinking of applying for Fall 2020, but I just barely got into a Pharmacology course for this upcoming Spring and it won't be done until a month after the deadline. I know I can put it in as "In Progress," but it seems that everybody who gets chosen for ABSN already has everything done. Just curious if anybody accepted had one "In Progress" class or not.

I had two in progress courses. Patho physiology and microbiology.

@Glial, thanks for responding! Makes me have hope! From what I've seen on this board, my GPAs and HESI are competitive enough, so I feel good about that. Just was checking if I can sneak through w/ one class in-progress.

Thanks!

@Mergirlc

I also had two in progress when I applied: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology. I am currently in finals for those two courses and SMU starts int 2 weeks!

There are people in every cohort who have had classes in progress during the time of application. I was accepted on the first attempt to the Sept 2019 Sacramento group with Patho and Lifespan Psych in process. Other than that, I had a very strong application. It really depends on the strength of everything else, including your essays. Additionally, since your core science GPAs are evaluated and strongly weighted (Anatomy, Physiology, Chem, and Micro), having any of those in process might push you further down the list. However, the cohorts tend to be quite diverse and there is no set formula. The pace of the program is extremely accelerated and they want to ensure you have demonstrated a strong academic showing.

Cool enough. I have A's in all the core sciences, so they're done -- so no problem there. I've just had one helluva time trying to get into a Pharmacology class and I finally made it into one, which starts next month. For once, not on the waitlist for Pharmacology.

Thanks for the info! Now to just conquer Pharmacology. ?

@TheBolivian Any tips for Pharmacology?

@Mergirlc

Tips I discovered are:

(1) KNOW how to do dosage calculations and read MARS. This is typically taught at the very beginning. Keep your notes as you will need them later for review in your nursing education.

(2) There are literally hundreds of meds. Rather than trying to memorize every single one of them, understand their "classes".

(3) And finally, take advantage of suffixes. For example meds ending in "olol" like atenolol are typically beta blocker antihypertensives. And meds ending in "pril" like lisinopril are typically ace inhibitor antihypertensives.

Thanks for the tips. I've perused various vids on YouTube and have seen the various dosage calculation videos. I'm probably going to stick w/ dimensional analysis since it's like stoichiometry in Chemistry. I'm still going to check out the other methods since I'm not sure if it's easier or not. I guess it's best to go w/ what I know and that's setting up problems like it's stoichiometry.

I'll definitely pay attention to classes and suffixes. Classes don't start for another month, so I'll try to get some reading and studying done ahead of time so I'm not completely lost.

Thank you so much! AND....Good luck to you, @RiverDancer @Glial
