2020 Spring SMU ABSN program

Published

Hey guys! wanted to start a tread for SMU ABSN program! Feel free to post any questions, updates or vent as this is a stressful time for all of us! Best of luck to you all!

Hey y'all, I'm not a huge post-er on this thread, but I got accepted at the Sacramento campus!

If you go back to the first few pages, I posted stats. This was also my 3rd application cycle. Good luck to everyone in the future!!

For those of you who are interested in the changes I made to my applications, here is what was suggested to me:

Try to bring your GPA (both science and last 60/90 units) into the 3.4 range or higher. I had to go back and retake my chemistry and both A&P classes to replace the B’s with A’s. This is kinda tricky if you have a C or a B, you’ll have to retake it out of district from your previous class. For instance, I took Chem at CSUS, so I could take it at ARC. I took my A&P classes at Sierra, so I could also take those at ARC. But there are several districts around us if you’re willing to go to Yuba, Woodland, Vallejo, Sierra, etc. I think it made a huge difference.

I started volunteering at Shriners Hospital. I volunteered about 2 hours a week and it was a great experience. When I started I was uncomfortable just walking into hospital rooms and talking to people (sometimes there was a language barrier), but now I feel very comfortable. I was sure to mention that in my statement too.

I had written a mostly emotional statement when I first applied. Then another applicant shared her statement which was more evidence based writing. When I look back at my first statement compared to my first, the second is much more polished and professional.

I redesigned my resume and laid it out with my “medical experience” at the top (after my personal statement), then followed by non-medical volunteer experience, and my non-medical work experience last. That was at the suggestion of the admissions counselor. You may want them to help you with yours specifically. I don’t know if that layout works best for everyone?

Last, I made sure that my three letters of recommendation were from non-friend sources. I had two professors and one from a nurse that is in a community service group with me. I had previously had one from an SMU ABSN grad who’s a friend of mine, but I was told to either exclude friends or ask them to scrub the letter of ANY reference to a friendship. Also, be sure you’re waiving your right to read the letters. It makes it more believable if the writer can write freely without fear that you might read it and be offended.

I would highly suggest making an appointment. I was so down about being waitlisted that I almost cancelled the appointment. But I went. And I asked her to rip apart my application, Mark it up, tell me ANY and EVERYTHING that could make it better. Once she saw that I wasn’t phased by constructive criticism, she gave me piles of advice. I left with a 3 application plan and I only needed two of those.

I hope that this helps some of you!

I’ll share my essay answers and resume info also if anyone wants it. I had an ELMSN alumni review it and make suggestions. Was very helpful. This was my first application cycle.

Well done!!

Thank you!! For some reason I am not able to private message you. Does that have anything to do with the fact that I am a new/recent member??
