Hello everyone!
I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)
Hi to all those still anxiously waiting for some sort of email of acceptance (hopefully!) I spoke to someone in the office, and they said we should be receiving an email by the end of the business day today ...so by 5pm we should know. For those of us that have gmail, it is best if the junk/spam folders are checked because the smu system sometimes has issues with the gmail server. If we don't get an email today by 5pm, call tomorrow and they can help you sort things out - but since tomorrow is the day before thanksgiving, calling before 2pm is probably best because they might go home early.
Yikes. All this waiting. Good luck to us!
Thanks guys. I'm still waiting on usf, I've been admitted before but turned down the offer because I had to wait a semester to start clinicals. So I reapplied, waiting for word and will probably hear back in December. If that doesn't follow through, I'll do an LVN program and do a bridge to bsn. What are your back up plans?

Hope you get in! I turned down an offer from dominican because i would have had to wait 3 semesters before i could start the program so i totally understand. I think if I don't get into merritt I will try to find a job as a medical assistant (i have my certification) and work for a bit, build up some more experience before I reapply again. I might apply to CSUEB and SF State, but i just feel like my chances are so small there because the competition is so high that there isnt really a point. This getting into nursing school thing is really tough! I'm still really hoping for SMU..

When I spoke to the counselor today, I asked her if it was reviewed and she confirmed that it was, but the results have not been released from faculty. Don't know how I feel about that...
