Speed Reading and Study Strategies

Have you taken a speed reading and study strategies course and did you find it worthwhile? My school is offering one with claims that reading speed will double or triple and comprehension will increase. I'm interested but skeptical!

You may not believe this, but I was taught speed reading in the fifth grade (1960s). (Some kind of experimental program I was in- they also taught us German.. for reasons that escaped me then, and still do.)

It has greatly impacted my academic trajectory- but I would caution you about a couple things.

First, be vigilant to know WHEN to speed-read and when to slow down and look for detail.

Second, it is REALLY easy to fall into speed-reading when taking a test. Avoid like the plague.

If you can be mindful of your reading, speed-reading is a terrific tool.

I am very skeptical of speed reading

I am very skeptical of speed reading

I'm curious - Why?

Speed reading is very useful in certain circumstances - like the news, novels, etc. However, I don't recommend speed reading highly technical nursing texts.

MMJ,

What a great opportunity to learn speed reading as a child!

I really enjoyed the class and found it to be beneficial for reading and studying.
