The bill for my nurse insurance arrived in the mail on Monday 5/27, they wanted the money by 6/1. Is it normal for a company to give you so little time to get the premium in the mail?

Do you mean it arrived 6/27 and they want the money by 7/1? Or are you just posing the question now out of curiosity?
Otherwise the provider needs to fire everyone in their accounting department.

I bet it is 6/27.

Yes that was a typo, it came on 6/27 and they want the money on 7/1. It is my first renewal of my insurance that I have had only one year and I thought, "maybe this is the way it is done". It seemed odd to me and I thought I would ask. I am going to dig out that phone number and complain. I like getting bills about 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of time. I don't like a month ahead of time because I set them aside and think I will get back to them and then I forget. However, 5 days notice is cutting it close.

For me, NSO always sends out a bill about 6-8 weeks ahead of time, then a second one a couple weeks ahead of time if you haven't paid it yet. (I hop online to pay it anyway, so it's pretty quick.)
I would call them and see if by chance they sent out an earlier one and you didn't receive it? Post offices are anything but reliable sometimes.

Yep, I received my NSO bill two months prior to due date. Just paid it the other day.

It is not normal. I have had this situation many times with my gas bill. It makes me so mad especially in the winter when it is so high. I usually get on the phone and call them. They apologize and give me an extension (about 2 weeks) for me to pay before they add a 1% late fee. To me what makes me mad is the fact that I like a paycheck away from poverty and I don't have the money just sitting around to be mailed with a 5 days notice.
Give them a call and I am sure they can give you more time to pay. After all, you need a considerate and reasonable amount of time. :)

I believe you have 30 days grace period that is the law with insurance...they just don't tell you that.
