Southwestern College ADN Fall 2018 Cohort

Published

I just wanted to start a topic for this upcoming Southwestern ADN cohort (Fall 2018)! What are everyone's stats? (GPA, Teas, etc). I'm also applying at San Diego City, Palomar College, Grossmont and National University.

Is your guys CNA license the size similar to that of a CPR card? I was shocked how small my CNA license really is.

Yes its the same size which is perfect because some employer wants you to have them both inside ur id at all times

Hi @marie0988, I don't believe I've heard of anything like that, at least for the Step Up program. I am not too sure if the same applies for the generic program. Could you elaborate a little bit on what the nursing success course is? Is it something that other schools require? Because I don't think I remember seeing anything similar to that on website; I think once you submit your application and you're accepted, you're in and you just begin the normal courses!

student success course is available over the summer for student who got in to the nursing program which cover basic dosage calculation. I am not sure if lvn are also required to take since they already have that covered that in their program. And, I heard lvn start on the third semester of the nursing program which is cool and I heard they enrolled atleast 10 of them per semester but don't quote me on that.

Hey guys, I have a question. How hard it is to get a cna job with no experience? I got my license in 2016 and did not find a cna job because I was working full time and taking the ore reqs for nursing school.

As a guy it took me six months to get a job because most resident doesn't want male can to take care of them therefore some facility have a max of two guys per shift.

Most job I worked at hired new grad cna if you feel you need some help please reach out to me I have friends from nursing home that can help you.

Do you guys know if they divide the morning and night program evenly? and that if you get accepted are looking at being in the morning or night program?

According to their website, they have evening/weekend and day/weekday classes. If I get in, I'm would like to be in the evening/weekend class.

For san diego city college, you need to enroll in a nursing success course if you get an acceptance invitation. It is an 8 week program during spring 2018. It is basically an information course for incoming nursing students.

If I remember correctly, you got into city right? Do you consider southwestern as your first choice?

I heard that 40 of those students will be morning and 20 will get evenings... if I'm not mistaken I guess it's prioritized by points. But they will ask which one you'd like. If I get in I'm happy w either day or evening... but If they ask I'll pick day to let someone who really needs evening have it :) I'm so nervous! I take me teas this weekend lol.

@gglopez good luck! The TEAS is really similar to SATs if you've ever taken that, but easier. Are you taking a computerized test? They give those results the same day so you would be perfectly in time to turn in your app. :) Last year when I took the dosage calculation test, it was with all the LVN applicants. I would say there were about 35 or so. If you've ever been inside the conference center at Southwestern's Gigantic Street campus, the seats were pretty much all filled. But even then, I think that's a pretty low number, especially compared to the generic program that has so many applicants.

@pansiegoboy Oh I see! I think our equivalent to that is the dosage calculation test the LVNs have to take once they've reviewed our apps. We have to pass with a 90% or more to be considered, and then from there we're chosen in order of points from highest to lowest. Yes I also hear that there's usually around 10 students that can enter! So hypothetically if I got accepted again, I'd be joining the cohort that started last fall.

Only 10?ugh!!! How was the test ? We're you able to use a calculator ?lol are you applying at all cc?

@gglopez I felt like the TEAS was surprisingly easy. I didn't have the chance to study at all because I had family visiting the week I tested but I did fine. They give calculators but the math was basic algebra so I never needed to use it. Science is probably the most challenging section but if you took Chem, Anatomy & Physio recently then you should still be fresh and good to go! There are some good and affordable study workbooks on Amazon too that could be a good resource. And no I only applied to Southwestern. Fingers crossed for both of us!!
