South University online NP?

Published

If I remember correctly, their NP program was only available on campus not too long ago. How long has the online NP been established? Has anyone here on allnurses.com attended and graduated from the online program? If so, how was your overall experience?

Here's the link to the program webpage:

Would live to hear all of you guys thoughts! I searched allnurses for more info but it yielded no profitable results. Thanks!

1andrea, currently there are no required site visits to the school. This was a big advantage to me. As with any masters program and online, there is a lot of writing. Depending on the class, you will have 1-2 discussion forum questions to post to as well as respond to your classmates posts with substantiating supportive references, and 1-2 papers per week. Most weekly papers are about 4 pages and if a final is required, it is 15 pages of less. A couple of classes have PowerPoint presentations. Hope this helps.

Hello, everyone, I am interested in the adult NP program and wanted your input. What kind of clinical experience are you able to have? Do you have to do any travel to the campuses? (I would be applying to the Savannah campus.) and how is the online class experience? I did the RN to BSN program online through Jacksonville University so I'm not afraid of online classes.

The design format will be very close to what you are used to. The first part of the program is aimed at the core curriculum, so you will get classes in theory and research as well as nursing. You will have students going for education, management, research, and nurse practitioner. I just started my clinicals on Thursday. I started the program at the end of March 2013 and will be graduating in December 2014 with my ANP. I had considered FNP, but after pharmacology have decided I will be more than happy treating teens and adults, while referring kids to pediatric NPs!

That's really great! Thank you for the information. Do you feel that South prepared you for your new role?

Can't really say yet in regards to clinicals...just started on Thursday. Currently working on 3 differential diagnoses for a patient with a sore throat, then write up a full patient history. I don't anticipate any hangups with the history, and find that several of the classes I have already taken are helping with the differential diagnoses.

You husband, a chiro like me hehe (that's what I recall)

That sounds great. If the hospital I work for will pay some of the tuition, since there's an exception to online programs, I will definitely be interested in attending. My biggest interest is the amount of hands on experience so I'm curious to see what is expected. Also, how often you have to come tocampus. Thank you for your time! I'm sure you been busy!

With SU, there are no required campus visits...they send the evaluator to your practicum site. As with any program, the more involved you are directly the more you will learn. They utilize typhon to report your clinical experience. You enter in the cases seen that day, what the chief complaint was, what you did, the diagnosis, any referrals, recommendations, teaching, diagnostics and meds "prescribed", and what percentage of the care did you provide (observed only, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). Your preceptor will then go behind and pass or fail your report. The instructor then reviews this for grading and feedback to the student.

That's really great. I'm really hoping that the hospital I work at will do tuition reimbursement with SU it sounds really good. Congratulations on your admission and good luck with it!

Fyi

do not go to this school

i am matirculating to a better, faster, friendlier program.

I blame the instructors and the terrible e-learning platform they use (pearson e-college). They are horrible, unprofessional, and fail to follow university grading policies.

Considered yourself warned! Many of my peers are leaving this program to other ones.

If you are going to enroll, i recommend you pay out of pocket before you give them your student loan money. That way, if you disenroll, they will not hold back more of your student load tuition. Do what i did and pay month to month with no money down.

I actually got into this program but decided against going with them because not all my classes from my other school would transfer in, so I waited a few more months and returned to the school I originally started with

I am starting FNP March 17th. So excited!
