Soooo. . . Am I Hired??

Published

okay, everyone. . . please tell me what you think this means because i am very confused.

i am a new lpn grad. i went to an ltcf today to put in an application. when i went back to the front desk to hand in my app., the secretary asked me to hold on, then placed a call to what seemed like the don, telling her that the applicant she just told her about is up front now and ready to be seen. i was a bit confused because

i was expecting it to be the routine. . "okay so we'll review your application and give you a call". nonetheless i considered myself lucky and waited to be seen. i asked the secretary if it was the don that would be coming to speak to me and she replied "no. . but she helps her sometimes". (i'm like, okaaay?? adon??)

so a woman comes out and (without introducing herself), explains to me that she will be leaving in two weeks on maternity leave. she says that she wishes i would have come sooner as they just hired two new grads but explained that they still needed someone part time in order to replace her replacement. she then tells me that i would be expected to work pt/per diem about 3-4 days a week and every other weekend and is that okay for me. i explained to her that i would be okay with that arrangement and my schedule is very flexible. she apologized, saying that she has already made the september schedule and so i wouldnt be on it until october, but in the same breath also stated that she would need to train me before she goes on leave (in two weeks).

at the end of our conversation, she asks me what number i can be reached at, asks the secretary to submit the background check, tells me it will be in by tuesday and tells me goodbye! needless to say, i walked out very confused and with a million questions!

who was this woman?

was this an interview?

did i get hired?

if i did get hired, how will i be trained in the next 2 wks if im not on the schedule?

are you only considered 'on the schedule' if you have your own assignment?

please help! i need answers. i probably should have called for clarification but i absolutely hate speaking to someone shortly after i've already said goodbye and i didn't want them to think my question was a stupid one. . can anyone help?

You're going to have to call the LTCF to get your questions answered...

I'd call and ask. I'm in a similar position, but my contact is on vacay. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I didn't make my question very clear, and I apologize for that.

While I am fully aware that only the person that I spoke to or the DON of the facility can make sense of this situation, I was still hoping that someone on here could just help me better understand what took place.

I'm not asking anyone on here to literally tell me if i was hired or not. . . obviously no one on here would have any way of knowing that. I was just confused as to what exactly took place and if, based on the conversation we had, I could deduce that I was seriously being considered for the positon.

As previously stated, this was unlike any interview I have ever been on and the whole situation was very bizzarre.

So again, to whoever reads my post and has some information or advice to offer, I would greatly appreciate it, but as far as being told "You're going to have to call the LTCF to get your questions answered", it's a waste of a post.

I hope I don't come off as ungrateful. I really do appreciate anyone who takes the time out to answer my post but the fact is, I am aware that that option exists but it's not an action I can take, as today is saturday (No DON present), tomorrow is sunday (No DON present), monday is labor day (No DON present), and tuesday is the day I expect to hear from them anyway so there would really be no point in calling them first to ask those questions as they will likely be answered.

Does anyone have any opinions on this, or has anyone been in a similar situation?

TIA

I would say they are very interested but it doesn't appear they even reviewed your application and they would need to do your background check before officially hiring you. When they officially hire you then paperwork will need to be filled out such as a W-2. If you are going back on Tuesday then I would bet they would officially hire you then. My guess is that this woman doesn't have much experience with hiring so she wasn't very clear. She is also more than likely is in a rush with her impending departure (and with pregnancy brain) that she wasn't clear. They may also just be very casual in their interview and hiring process. Also you would need to be oriented to your new job so you wouldn't officially be on a schedule until that is completed. Is the woman that you spoke with going to be there this weekend? If so I would call them back and ask to speak with her. It is normal to call or send a card when an employer has met with you to thank them for their time, so you could go in that direction and then ask what the next steps in the process will be. I would also continue to place your resume at other employers. Also be sure to think about what questions you would like answered and then write them down. Some questions would be what does the job entail? Can I do a few hours of job shadow covering the job I will be doing? etc It is almost impossible to remember your questions during an interview without writing them down.

Good luck with your job quest

Thank you Pixiep! You're right, I guesss I'll just wait to hear from them on tuesday. She isn't there at all this weekend, and I don't think she'll be there until tuesday. She told me that she would be submitting my background check and that I should expect to hear from her on tuesday, so i guess for now, it's the waiting game. . . Thanks agaain for your reply and wsh me luck on getting this job!

Kemkem, it sounds to me u were in the right place @ the right time. It seems the lady is in a hurry to get someone in and probably would rather not sit through tons of applications dating back to who knows when. She told you she would call you on Tuesday, if she doesn't you have all the right to feel confident enough to call her, giver her til after luch if she doesn't call you, then immediately call her. Just relax & everything will fall into place you got this far, it can only get better from here. Best of Luck.

Everyone's responses have been very supportive and encouraging :) I would also like to add something a little different. Be careful with on the spot hiring like that. I have seen multiple times in the past where the employer's desperation to find new hires could indicate a high turnover rate due to poor management or something negative. You should "court" them and they should do the same. You might do some research on the facility and check its reputation, if you haven't done so already. If they're ready to "hop in bed" and offer you a job without doing any research, it may reflect a situation you ultimately won't want to be involved in. Just offering a different perspective. Good luck with your job search! :)

This sounds a bit scary to me and I would be on guard if I were you. It sounds like they are rushing to fill a position are they are working on the "warm body theory" which means they are filling these positions with whoever comes along. This is a bad practice, because you may end up working with some really bad people. You should call them back and make a formal appointment with the DON to ask your questions such as how many pts will you have, orientation, who you will be working with, shift, back up for problems, pay, benefits etc. This just sounds fishy to me.
