I am an international student from India and will be graduating in Dec. '09 from a community college with an ADN. I know about the scarcity of nursing jobs available but I am optimistic about it. Anyways I need to know how to find a Govt. hospital or any hospital that will be willing to sponsor me? I need to plan out my future and I need help from anyone. Furthermore, I have not yet decided which area in Nursing I should work. One of my friends who is a nurse for 7 years told me that it would be a good idea to work in the Neurological department in the ICU and then after a year go into an Acute care setting. According to her it will be a good way to get enough experience to be accepted in any hospital. I need your help.
Mohd. Ali, I think your cousin was only looking out for you because the economy was pretty bad but now lately...countries like Japan and Germany's economy is getting better so I think the US economy can recover too....so dont give up hope if you are interested in continuing with your Masters go ahead..but if you want to go ahead with Nursing then do that....the thing is that you can work for a year after you graduate then you can get enrolled in a college that offers BSN and most hospitals are willing to pay for the education.....so the next thing u really have to do try to think what you want to do and dont really have to worry about the work permit, economy or the Visa.....As they say **** happens countries will always have problems.....no matter wat....!!! So on a lighter note....I was only saying that so that you would not take Nursing lightly....and God forbid if you by any chance fail a semester...I dont want you to loose your faith!!!
Even with a BSN, new graduates do not legitimately qualify for H1B visas/employment, and the government has been cracking down on misuse of H1Bs. There are multiple other threads here about this issue.
elkpark could you elaborate on that for me.....I am interested in knowing how the new graduates illegitimately qualify for a H1B1 visa....and how is the Government cracking down on the misuse of H1Bs
H1b is a specialist visa and new grads do not meet requirements and you must have a BSN or higher. Also need to be aware of retrogression and especially India is retrogressed and looking at joining the queue and many years of waiting. You CAN NOT AOS If you have applied for OPT then you can work and save money as the only way to be able to stay in the US is maintain your student visa and go for your BSN.
I am moving this to the International forum as there is much you need to be aware of

This is the USCIS definition for H1b visa
Q : What is an H-1B?
The H-1B is a nonimmigrant classification used by an alien who will be employed temporarily in a specialty occupation or as a fashion model of distinguished merit and ability.
Q : What is a specialty occupation?
A specialty occupation requires theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge along with at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. For example, architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, business specialties, accounting, law, theology, and the arts are specialty occupations.

I know in California they are investigating anyone who holds a H1b visa. It's due to the abuse of the visas as to why they're cracking down on that particular visa. I believe a lot of H1b visa holders have no idea that they don't qualify for the visa, and the sad thing is that they will be deported and banned from re-entering the country for a lot of years.
