I am an international student from India and will be graduating in Dec. '09 from a community college with an ADN. I know about the scarcity of nursing jobs available but I am optimistic about it. Anyways I need to know how to find a Govt. hospital or any hospital that will be willing to sponsor me? I need to plan out my future and I need help from anyone. Furthermore, I have not yet decided which area in Nursing I should work. One of my friends who is a nurse for 7 years told me that it would be a good idea to work in the Neurological department in the ICU and then after a year go into an Acute care setting. According to her it will be a good way to get enough experience to be accepted in any hospital. I need your help.
To get a government hospital job such as with the VA, you need to be a US citizen. The government does hire non-citizens on a temporary basis but only if there are no qualified citizens available...unfortunately for you, there's a ton of qualified US nurses also looking for work. You could still try applying for one, but because there's no lack of qualified citizens, your chances of getting a government hospital job are very slim.
I would focus on regular (non-government) hospitals instead--you may have better luck finding someone there who will sponsor you.
Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. What will be the best place for me to work at this moment. I am currently residing in KY and need to know if I should move out of here and find a job somewhere else or do I stick around over here...I have no ties over here until I graduate.....so that I can plan where to write my Nclex.........
I did not know that VA hospitals only hire US citizens, I understand why but I had never heard of that before.
Neither did I...but I went up to the VA a few weeks ago to apply, and they gave me an information folder--there it was under Hiring Policies/Qualifications. I copied that info in my post for the OP.
I was in contact with a Recruiter from the VA,and he told me one had to be a USA citizen as well, and he stated they rarely hire new grads. He told me if they were to hire a new grad, one one come in as a GS 5 or 6, which is around $30,000 a year, but once one got a yrs worth of experience, your pay would go up a fair bit, but he didn't actually give me a pay level. I only talked to that 1 recruiter, so I don't know how much of it is the "truth"
Hey Jim, I dont think I can help you get a job because I myself am a student in my last semester. As far as the course is concerned....it cannot be compared with the standard of India, here they require your total dedication to the program...I had to repeat one of semester before I became serious!!! The course is hard.....once you get all your prerequisites taken care off then you have to be excepted......And once you start it try to read all the chapter that were assigned for that day in advance!!!! But if you want any other help I will do my best!
thanx.. for giving me this advice..... i was doing my masters in industrial management... but one of my idiotic cousin made me transfer for nursing... now iam really worried that after doing ADN RN we cant fetch an H1 job.. we need to do BSN RN for getting an H1 job... and do you really mean that it is hard to complete.... nursing..... now iam totally scared.... and by the way my name is not jim iam sorrry for that.. its Ali mohammed
