Noone replied when I posted this post in the Arrogance of some Dr's soo I decided to open up a new thread because I need feed back, I
need to know am I wrong to be angry and is it a bad idea to speak with this MD alone to tell him I am sorry he thought I was being disrespectful, but he should have pulled me aside to tell me what he thought I had done wrong......
Well talking about Arrogance, I am very disgruntled about what happened to me yesterday......It started out to be a busy day with 5 RN's scheduled and only 2 showing up, because the other 3 had their own crisis happening in their lives....the night crew decided to stay and help out . I had 2 laboring pt's one of whom was deaf/mute and in pain with no real way to express herself (I gave her stadol/phenergan sivp) which did not help her at all and explaining the epidural to her was quite an experience I would not like to visit in the near future, anyway while I was boulusing her for the epidural, my other pt was having deccels from 150's to 70's & 80's lasting 50-60sec, I turned off the pitocin gave her O2 and the whole bit, alerted the MD to come and assess the strip......The Dr. came and agreed it was a nonreassuring strip, but wanted to keep the pit off and then restart it once the baby recovered. A short while later I restarted the pitocin and the baby started to have varriable deccels occuring after the ctxs, so I called the Dr. to make him aware of the deccels occuring after the ctxs, as I was talking to him the FHT'S went down to the 60's he then called a stat c/s.
I had a lot of help from my co-workers and we were working quickly(in the mean time I'm thinking my poor deaf/mute pt is dying of pain and I hope this decceling baby is Ok!)So anyway the Dr comes in and starts screaming those are not late deccels they are varriables! I could not belive he was worrying about what kind of deccels they were when the FHT'S were down to the 70's and had not recovered, so I screamed back that is not the point! the baby is down and it needs to come out!, then he say's oh yes it is you need to take a fetal monitoring class and educate yourself!(me who is certified in fetal monitoring), so I said we don't need to talk about this right now!, he said you don't tell me when and where to talk! and I just shouted whatever!, he shouted young lady don't give me any attitude! and I decided I would just shut up so he could get the damn baby out.....Baby came out 9/9 apgar(Thank God!).
I was furious for several hrs and the Dr. had the nerves to come to me later that day to tell me if I want a Dr to respect me I have to show some respect not even his kids say whatever to him and that the next time he will right me up..............................The arrogance is killing me I am still furious :angryfire :angryfire
Sometimes keeping your cool under high stress is easier said then done.
I find that Physcians and others who call themselves healthcare professionals who feel the need to raise their voice and feel everyone is beneath them is actually insecure ,weak human beings :chair: . I do not even tolerate this type of behavior but the rest of the nurses are correct in saying to bite your tongue esp. in front of the patient,or leave the room and cool down.
He wanted a reaction out of you and I know Physcians like that, which I had to take aside and let them know in a low tone yet forceful voice if they ever got in my personal space or face again I would not only take the matter to the hospital CEO but also to the corporate ethics commitee.
Do not let anyone steal your joy! Next time you see him give him a big grin, it will just eat him up! :rotfl:
I didn't even get a chance to tell him I didn't me to disrespect him, he was a total ass today as usual, soooooooo I just wrote my complaint on paperNow it's on file :yelclap:
yes you should be mad and yes you should talk to him about this issue.
I agree that it is inapproprate to argue in front of a patient but I don't think that nurses should be expected to take it when a doctor yells at them in front of a patient. So I'm glad you gave it back to him like that.
If we take verbal beatings in front of patients we perpetuate the image of nurses as hand madians also in this case it would make the patient doubt your skills and that isent good for her. So giveing it back to him was the right thing to do.
I also see his referring to you as "young lady" and compareing you to his children as very disrespectful and demeaining.
Anyway I hope that you can work things out with him and come out on even ground.
We are now on speaking terms, funny as it may be he is chief of OB now and he requested that we put in writing what we thought could change our unit to make it a better place to work...Boy did I have fun with that, I wrote several pages on how important it is not to disrespect each other no matter what rank we are, also professionalism must be maintained at work, ect..... I must say it is a little uncomfortable working side by side with this man, but I do feel support from the charge nurses/nurse manager and that is a begining hopefully our docs will get the hint not to mess with usyes you should be mad and yes you should talk to him about this issue.I agree that it is inapproprate to argue in front of a patient but I don't think that nurses should be expected to take it when a doctor yells at them in front of a patient. There have been several cases on my unit when the RN had called the doc bcuz of decel's and the MD laughed them off, or dismissed them. I'm not sure if it has ever escalated to that kind of a blow up before, though. What an uncomfortable situation. I think my best response would be "I'm sorry, Dr. so-and-so, but in my EFM certification class, we were taught that this is what constitutes a late decel." Basically, there is no point in arguing with him because you're not going to change his mind. I agree with the previous posters - advocate, demand that you be treated as a professional, but NEVER in front of a pt, and never lose your cool in the process!

Just leave the incident on file and do not discuss it with him. If he brings it up, simply tell him that you have filed the incident with your nurse manager. Refer him to her. Leave it at that.
