Socializing after work in your scrubs

Published

Yuck! Who does this? So my husband and I are on a long weekend in Taos, NM. Friday night we were at a local bar listening to a band. In walk a group of women in their mid-twenties. They appeared to have just gotten off work, as they were all wearing scrubs. They hung out at the bar for several hours, drinking, shooting pool, dancing, flirting with men. Wearing their scrubs. Yuck! Of course, after having a couple beers, myself, I was tempted to approach them and ask if they knew how gross and unhygienic that was, but I'm not a big person, and these women were all somewhat large and could have broken me like kindling, and luckily I hadn't had so much to drink that I was that foolish (my husband, of course, bet me $5 to say something to them).

All I could think of all night was fomites!

Wearing scrubs after work is gross. Even if they appear to be clean, you have no idea what kind of germs landed there. It isn't proper infection control. I've known of nurses who do this, and I've commented on it.

This is absolutely unprofessional and unhygenic. One of the most stressed topics in hygene class was how to properly wash your hands and to shower and change right after shift. Oh and to never ever wear your work shoes in the house. Common sense when you consider what us health professionals come into contact with on a daily basis.
That was a joke right? Hygiene class?

Is that the definition of "fomiting all over town"?

Yes, but only when done at multiple locations within the city limits ;)

I needed a laugh this morning. Thanks!!!

I don't see why a nurse after work in scrubs is any grosser than a business person who's shaken hands with 30 people, been on two air planes, and pulled his pants down to poop in 2 public restrooms in the period of a day... Yes, we visibly encounter grossness. But there is a LOT of VERY transient, invisible, virulent, transmissible stuff out there too. If you're that opposed to germs, you're the one who should consider avoiding the bar- germs aren't limited to people in scrubs.

Exactly. Guess whatthe germiest place is. An Airplane. And I have never seen anyone change their clothes in the airport bathroom.

Around here receptionists in vets offices, dental offices, physicians offices all wear scrubs as do hospital reception personnel. I don't really see anything unhygenic about these people being out and about in their scrubs. Indeed I have even been to a hair salon where the shampoo girl wears scrubs. SO, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Don't freak out over something that you have no idea about!

You have no idea where those nurses work, so to assume they were "dirty" could have been incorrect. Nurses can work in many capacities and are not always exposed to bodily fluids. For example, I work as a nurse manager in an outpatient facility. I wear scrubs because sometimes I have to assist with infusions..that's all. We do not come into contact with any infectious material. Everyone who comes to us for treatment is healthy. It's no different than people going out for a drink after work in their business clothing or whatever. Now, if I DID work in a facility where I handled body fluids routinely, I would change. Too...I have gone out to the grocery store after work, because I'm not bringing clothes to change into so I can buy a gallon of milk. I don't care what anyone thinks, and if they don't like..they don't have to look at me, or stand next to me. :0) I've also gone out for an impromptu drink .... Also, the girl dancing and drinking might just save your "grandmother's" life some day.... We are nurses, not nuns.

I stop anywhere I need to after work. I am so guilty. I've gone to the bar, grocery shopping, stopped by a friends, ate at restaurants and other everyday things all with my scrubs on. I too have picked up children from day care and have been handed those notes regarding the newest bug to hit the place from lice to hand and foot disease, to strep.

I've probably, though can't recall, even changed one of my babies diapers while out and about (and they didn't have hand sanitizer back then). Gasp!

I know when we went to the bar after work, we weren't looking to be guy magnets. We just wanted to relax and have some fun.

You must be very popular with all that you come into contact with.
