i am graduating in may after waiting years to become a nurse. i have always, since the tender age of about 9, wanted to be a nurse.
i simply cannot express how much it :angryfire burns my hide :angryfire that everyone and their mother wants to be a nurse now. what's with the sudden enthusiasm and interest in nursing??? particularly in ca, in seems that everyone is telling me that they are doing pre-req's for nursing. ***?? my friend (also graduating with me in may) pointed out that it seems more and more men are coming into nursing. now, maybe she and i will get raked over the coals for this one, but before the $$ spike for nursing pay, men would be laughed at (a la ben stiller in meet the parents) for being a nurse.
i just find it so frustrating that everyone wants to be a nurse now, especially since nursing has become quite the lucrative career. what happened to wanting to be a nurse because you (*gasp*) care about people and like (*gasp #2*) helping others???????
this is all boiling over with me because i see quite a few of my classmates that clearly are in this for the money. i, personally, would rather die than be their patients - that's how greedy, selfish, money-hungry some of my lovely classmates are.
sorry - i just have to vent.
**please note: i absolutely do not mean that men should not be in nursing - i think it's great. i am generally frustrated at seemingly everyone (both men and women) being interested in nursing, now that it pays so well (esp. in ca). please do not accuse me of being sexist**.
I find that the nurses like you who have an arrogance about how good they are for their intentions about becoming nurses are a lot more likely to burn out and leave the profession when they find out health care is not Utopia.
Arrogant is the last word that people use to describe me. However, seeing as that all you know of me is this post (which I now regret ever posting) you wouldn't know that. I DESPISE arrogrance. However, I can see why people would JUGDE ME as being arrogant. Feel how you want to feel. I'll be happy to send my classmate to your state. See how much you love her rolling her eyes at your loved one in excruciating pain. Then tell me how I couldn't judge/foresee that she shouldn't be a nurse.
Wow. I came to vent and yet I wished I hadn't joined this forum at all. So much for theraputic release. That's support for you. I can repsect everyone elses opinions here even though it seems people aren't happy/respectufl wth my posting. :banghead:
There is a huge nursing shortage if you weren't aware, so if you are as driven by the humanitarian aspect of nursing as you claim to be, you should be overwhelmed with joy over the influx of new nursing students.
If you noticed in my posts, you will see that I am in CA - no nursing shortage here, buddy. Far from it. I'll be damn lucky if I can find a job when I'm done.
I am a humanist - maybe that's why I am CONCERNED with less-than-compassionate classmates.
Good god, I should have NEVER vented/tried to find support here. Big mistake.
, you come across as pretty mean-spirited. Remember that whatever anyone else does does not diminish what you have accomplished or who you are.
I appreciate your comment (the last part, anyway) however, I know I am NOT a mena-spirited person. Quite the opposite.
But, it seems that no matter what I say, people have pinned me as mean, judgmental, critical and the like. As I said about 5 times now, I should have never posted.
I know that I am a good person. But again, I appreciate the last part of your post - it does put things into perspective. I will just be the best nurse I can and not worry about my classmates/co-workers. Thanks, truly.
OK so I'm probably gonna get beat on for this, but in all actuality, ( and I think that every working nurse here could concur, were they honest) I don't care about every patient that I take care of....gasp!!! And believe me, I do take care of every patient that is my responsibility...do you see the difference here? I appreciate that there are nurses that have wanted to be nurses since they were in the womb, but it does NOT make a person a bad nurse if they aren't one of those. And you don't have to care about every single person you take care of, because frankly, some of them are not very nice folks. I care enough on a human level not to allow them to suffer or die or anything, but that's about it. Otherwise the prisoner i took care of who was in jail for rape, nope, didn't care about him. But I did my job...I guess what I'm saying is that you really don't have to be super kind hearted or whatever to do the job, as evidenced by every time a nurse takes care of an awful human being, and does it well, depite the bad taste that person leaves in his/her mouth...by extension a nurse who doesn't really like people could probably still do the job fairly well, though not very sweetly(can't think of the word i'm looking for here:D), i guess...
I very much can appreciate and agree with your post. I think the higlighted/bolded part (my doing) was well said. It's a great point. Thanks.
Ok, I think I am done replying to everyone and feeling as though I have to defend myself/my comments. I can respect everyone's opinion. Thanks for all the unput.

It's not that we (at least I) don't respect your posting..everyone has their own opinion. I think it's HOW you came across in your posting (and let's remember, people can not accurately convey their feelings all the time through written word..that's why in-person communication is best, but of course that's irrelevant here). You came across as being..I'll say..VERY annoyed by the influx of nursing students.
As I stated before, don't worry about the other students. More than likely..they will be weeded out. And if you find yourself in the situation of one of them making it as a nurse..and taking care of your loved one, you will be in a position as a nurse to correct that situation with their nurse manager.
IMHO, I think you're concerned about having to compete with these students for jobs where this is no shortage. And I know..bc in the NY/NJ area..there is the same thing going on..NO nursing shortage for new students.
Just make sure you stay on your game..don't worry about the competition..and do your best to set yourself apart from the pack.
Good luck.
And if I see one more post about me thinkiNG I'm BETTER than someone else, I'm going to scream!! I NEVER EVER EVER said that I was BETTER than others for wanting to be a nurse at 9. I was simply stating how I question why you would go into nursing if, like my classmate, you see people as "animals in a zoo".Yep. I knew it. I should have kept this crap to myself.
I NEVER SAID I WAS BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was speaking to the posts in general on this topic. I didnt single you out in that paragraph, was just voiceing my frustration on the MANY topics like this one.

what makes you think i don't care about people and like helping others? what, exactly, gives you the right to judge the decisions of anyone. i think you need to mind your business, and quit worrying about what everyone else is doing. you don't own the profession of nursing.

Seems like you were venting about a particularly unpleasant classmate, yet generalized her behavior to everyone who got into nursing for reasons other than wanting to become Mother Theresa incarnate.
Then, when some folks defended their personal motives, they're being disrespectful???!!! :banghead:
There are other threads on this subject in which I've posted, so I won't reiterate here ... do a search on the site if you want to see the range of opinion on this subject.
I just want to point out one thing: you post on a public forum, you take your chances that some people won't agree with you ... this is not disrespect, it's disagreement.

Thanks, lovely. I sincerely appreciate this! :)
Your right, heron, I shouldn't have generalized to everyone else based on my classmates actions. My mistake. Perhaps I should say I don't know why she wants to be a nurse when she clearly lacks empathy.
Ok, that's it...I'm done talking about it.

Perhaps "calling" was the wrong word. Seeing as that I'm atheist, I certainly don't see a higher being as what called me into this field.
