So, tell me again why you suddenly want to be a nurse...?

Published

i am graduating in may after waiting years to become a nurse. i have always, since the tender age of about 9, wanted to be a nurse.

i simply cannot express how much it :angryfire burns my hide :angryfire that everyone and their mother wants to be a nurse now. what's with the sudden enthusiasm and interest in nursing??? particularly in ca, in seems that everyone is telling me that they are doing pre-req's for nursing. ***?? my friend (also graduating with me in may) pointed out that it seems more and more men are coming into nursing. now, maybe she and i will get raked over the coals for this one, but before the $$ spike for nursing pay, men would be laughed at (a la ben stiller in meet the parents) for being a nurse.

i just find it so frustrating that everyone wants to be a nurse now, especially since nursing has become quite the lucrative career. what happened to wanting to be a nurse because you (*gasp*) care about people and like (*gasp #2*) helping others???????

this is all boiling over with me because i see quite a few of my classmates that clearly are in this for the money. :nono: i, personally, would rather die than be their patients - that's how greedy, selfish, money-hungry some of my lovely classmates are.

sorry - i just have to vent.

**please note: i absolutely do not mean that men should not be in nursing - i think it's great. i am generally frustrated at seemingly everyone (both men and women) being interested in nursing, now that it pays so well (esp. in ca). please do not accuse me of being sexist**.

What is wrong with making money??? Let me know if you would do any job for free, especially after you have been a RN for a year. Good luck in you career.

I don't think there's anything wrong with getting into nursing for a decent paycheck, any more so that for getting into engineering, medicine, teaching, etc. Just because it's not a calling does NOT mean you can't care for patients, and do a fantastic job!

hmm, interesting job and stable job market...but money is secondary in this case.

hmm, nothing is wrong with making money,it is just simply boring to do it just for the paycheck...do you like boredom,I sure dont.

Usually people who go for engineering, medicine or teaching dont go for the paycheck, they are intelligent, have intellectual capabilities and have strong interest in above mentioned areas.Do you actually think people would do 8 if not more year of schooling with lacking interest in it,nope I dont think so.

because, of course, right now *everybody* that wants to be a nurse gets to *suddenly* be a nurse. and all the waiting lists have suddenly *poof* disappeared.

A: Coz I just do. Is that a problem?? :)

Several men in my family are nurses - this has been their profession for a long time. They get paid well because they're good at what they do. I don't know of anyone who laughs at them but if they do or did - who the hey cares?? I don't know anyone who thinks about who might/might not laugh at their chosen career path. Grown folks have roofs to keep over their heads and kids to feed - if we can pull this off and get paid for something we feel good about doing that's as much as anyone can ask for.

BTW Nursing isn't an exclusive club - there are actual sick people out there who need actual care. Seeing more people in nursing school isn't the same as going to a gathering and seeing too many people wearing your outfit. So unless/until the world runs out of sick people there can't be too many nurses.

I think that for the most part, if someone isn't cut out for nursing they won't last. Of course there is always the exception but I think many people would agree that nursing isn't the kind of thing that you can be happy doing if it is ONLY for the money. Cut others some slack, most people don't know what they want to do when they grow up by the time that they are nine. Just because you were lucky enough to have this kind of foresight, it doesn't mean that you are entitled to something that others aren't. I know its hard to get into nursing school, but once you accomplish your goals it will be that much more satisfying.

i can relate to every single words you wrote,seriously..i have a couple of classmates that that certainly do not hide it their true motives for becoming nurses.they are the worse back-stabbers,gossiper and unkind people i met throughout my whole career as students...and good actors, they know how to hide their ugly attitudes from the instructors and pretend to be the next mother teresa,i just laugh when i see that...but i must add they have good acting skills...

couple years ago there was no waiting lists....actually nursing programs tended to lower their standards to recruit people...how do I know..because I wanted to get into nursing but didnt have my preq done.
