So yesterday in clinical an opportunity came up to do a foley and the nurse asked me to do it. Now this was the first foley I or anyone in my clinical group gave gotten to try.
The patient graciously let us all participate. I set up with my assistant. Tried to get it in no luck. My assistant tried no luck. My INSTRUCTOR tried no luck. So we got the head nurse to put it in.
No that didn't bother me. it was my first time. What bothered me was my classmates were taking s about me and when I caught them they switched into spanish. Later when we were waiting in the elevator I pointed out that english is supposed to be the primary language in patient care areas unless the patient needs it to be otherwise. They didn't get it and immediately said "Weren't talking about you" now I understand spanish but since I can't really speak it I never tell anyone .
We what really got my goat was in report one student said "What I learned today was you can be an A student and not be any good at skills" I never give anyone a hard time about the fact they are barely passing so I thought that was a little bit nasty since I never seen her do anything. She can't even take a blood pressure.

our school has very strict rules about people speaking other languages in clinical! unless it is a conversation with a patient, you are not allowed because you never know who can hear you or who might know exactly what you are saying. there have been several instances of classmates speaking another language in the halls, only to find out in report that a patient understood what they were saying and complained. Not smart students!!!
I'm sorry this happened. Some people need to get a clue! Just rise above it and move on....it will bite them in the butt eventually!

Sometimes people are threatened by other students that are doing well. It sounds like the other students took an opportunity (even though it wasn't deserved) to make a snide comment at your expense. It's just their insecurity, please don't take it personally. I know it can be hurtful but brush it off and turn your focus back to nursing. Rise above their bs and just believe in yourself and those types of comments will hurt less and less.
Yeah I know it shouldn't bother me but I feel like they are always looking over my shoulder trying to catch me out to make themselves feel better. We're students we're not supposed to be experts yet especially when they themselves have not proven themselves yet.
I know. It sounds like they haven't proven themselves at all. If it will make you feel better maybe when they make a comment next time you can calmly point out that you haven't seen anyone else stepping up to the plate.
I'm always dissaspointed when students don't look out for each other and support each other. Hang in there. Maybe next semester you'll be able to meet some fellow students who are into supporting each other and pushing each other in a healthy way.

This would bother me, too. But....I would try to ignore this immaturity. Honestly, who cares what they think? You know you are a good student and it sounds like they have a bit of growing up to do. Someday (very soon, I imagine)---someone will put them in their places.
ETA: If this continues to happen and really bothers you, are you straightforward enough to say something like "I'm sorry, what did you say, (insert name here)?" That may be enough to put them on the spot. Or, you could even smile and say something like "I learned how important teamwork is in our profession"---if the comment about 'being an A student and not having skills' is made....
Well I feel better today the antagonist in the story put a nasal cannula on upside down and the patient had to correct it for her and the instructor pointed out that the pt from yesterday's anatomy was unique in that the spot was difficult to find.

It sounds like they are insecure/immature/jealous. Try to let it roll off your back. (You can think about them quietly to yourself when you pass your board exam and they flunked out months before.)

yup, and polish up your understanding of spanish,,,,,just so you know exactly what they are saying......and it will benefit you later any way.....
of course, the high road here, would be to offer study assist to them, but they would prob be insulted and twist that around to make you seem condescending......my first sem. of A+P, i had a fellow student sort of attach herself to me....i unofficially tutored her and got a better grade myself, an A- i think....next sem she didnt take, and my grade was sl less.....

I am shocked and disgusted. There definitely are times when the anatomy is 'unusual' and even if it was a urethra large enough to drive a truck through how rude for them to say that! The good news is that you will be graduating with or without honing your foley insertion skills. I hope they can say the same. Karma anyone?
I got another chance the next day to do a foley btw and got it first shot without having the large studio audience. They still haven't tried their hand since we don't get many foley opportunities.
And they can be as technically perfect as they want skills wise but a 60% is not going to earn them a pass to the next term.
