Snow & calling out of work

Published

So I've been a nurse for 4 years now. I live in the south where snow is not common. As of today every school system in the area is closed due to the snow. I have no kids, but this tells you how bad it is in the area. I live in the country and it's a 35 minute interstate drive to the hospital where I work. I am not sure if I should attempt to get to work or simply call out. I feel like I should at least try, but I've never had this problem before because I haven't been scheduled to work during a snow event before. I have very little experience driving in snow and the roads aren't plowed out here in the country.

So what would you do in this situation? Or what have you done in the past?

I am posting this because I really want opinions of nurses, not just my family/friends who advise me to stay home.

Thanks!!

Yes I made it to work. It was slick but I drove very slowly and didn't have a problem. A SUV flew past me and ended up about 2 feet from slamming into a rock wall. Driver was ok.

This thread has so many posts and I haven't read them all. Thankfully I didn't die as some have speculated

Honey don't even bother reading all the posts. LOL. Just let them argue with each other.

Theres been a lot of good discussion on the issues nurses face relating to the weather with minimal rude comments. Don't poke a bear when you don't even know the responses.

Sweetheart I've read the responses. I get the notifications every time someone comments on this thread. And while there MAY be good discussion on this thread there is also alot of arguements going on. No one is poking a bear. I'm sure the OP has read enough in the first few pages on what she should try to do and that should be enough. Why read 17 pages of people taking personal attacks at each other (and yes it's been happening). So please, you can save it.

I'm just curious, you're probably in a different region and it doesn't translate the same, but here if you use sweetheart in this context, it's derrogatory.

Wow.. LOL... I'm in VA, and while it wasn't meant to be derogatory (how on earth?!) it also wasn't meant to be endearing.Just like calling the OP Honey, I'm just used to it out here. But I guess ppl can take things the wrong way. It is what it is I guess.

My state doesn't get snow but back in 2004/2005 we got hurricanes practically every other weekend during the season. We were expected to get to work. If we lived in an evacuation area, we were expected to evacuate to the hospital. When the next shift showed up during the storm, we were told that if we went home to make sure we would make it back the next day, if any question about the roads, then we should sleep in the facility. In their opinion, it was plan ahead, and plan on being at work.

Here on the West Coast, it's derogatory, by and large. Occasionally I'll run into someone that uses terms like "sweetie", "honey" ("hon" for short), etc., but it's not really the norm and can be taken as patronizing. It depends a lot on who is saying it and how it is said.

I've read all of the posts too, and this is the first one that reads as a personal attack. You can unsubscribe from the notifications of you're not interested in reading the thread, but don't complain if you do read. No one forced you to.

You have GOT to be kidding me. A personal ATTACK?! Please stop. I've never attacked you. You're the one that accused me of poking a bear and not reading anything. Have I complained about the thread or the notifications? No. I simply stated I have read all of the posts and I get notifications when someone comments on the thread. That is ridiculous.

We can PM about this all day. I'm not going to sit here on a thread about driving in snow going back and forth about how you interpret mine or anyone else's comments.

I never thought a thing about you saying sweetheart or honey, but then again I'm from TN and it's common here
