Smoking

I think we all know smoking is bad for us. Even if we do it, but should any place be able to not hire a smoker? I understand no smoke breaks and no smoking on the grounds. But you can't work here because you smoke at home! What do you think?

I am a horribley disgusted with myself nicotine addict. Yes it is my right to smoke as it is not illegal. I agree that a facility has every right to be smoke free and not allow smoking on there premesis though I would not work there. It is however noones business what I do in my own home period! I think offering smoking cessation is a great thing. But I would need an impatient program as when I try to quit I go wacko. Who is going to pay for that kind of program. Until then get off my back and put on your deoderant because your BO offends me, and while your at it get a attitude transplant cause that too is effecting everyone around you.

. Is it then safe for me to reason that most smokers are bad decision makers based on their habit of smoking?

I am not a smoker, I will never be stupid or weak minded enough to smoke LOL Flame away !!!

While you have valid points, I don't think calling smokers "bad decision makers" or or "stupid and weak minded" is going to make many people interested in what you have to say.

Passionate ideas about the subject are on thing, but derrogatory name calling is another.

IT IS a strange world, Rusty. I agree.

And I think NOT hiring a person cause he/she smokes is WRONG...

and no one will find a bigger cigarette-hater than me.

what a person does at home (that is LEGAL, no less) should be HIS/HER business. I don't like it.

Next: not hiring people because they drink occasionally, or are overweight, have a chocolate addiction, WHHHHAAT???

And PilotJm, I am to ASSUME you have NO habits, fixations or anything that ANYone here would perceive to be "weak-minded or stupid" right? that was derogatory and deliberately inflammatory, I think. Really just a nasty thing to say and contributed NOTHING to the thread.:(

Oh lord, if they don't hire chocolate addicts, i'll never get a job. There needs to be a 12 step program for the Lindor Truffle.

Well, I took one of PilotJim's perfect pills last night before going to bed. Must have been the wrong strength. Woke up this morning still stupid, still weak-minded, and still smoking. Bummer.

all of the preaching in the world about why not to smoke has not made a dent on my thick nicotine skin. I sure want to thank Jim,

his kind words are appreciated.

I worked at a place that actually used the metropolitin table for weight chart, and YES, they did not hire over weight people for health risk, and in areas that required quick response like ER and ICU areas. unfair?? probabably , but true...............

I dont mean to be derrogatory...and I didnt DIRECTLY call these people stupid or weak minded but I got the responses I thought I would get because this is typical of most smokers.... if the truth hurts, just swallow it!!! Also, it is VERY easy to point the finger at others problems and lay the blame somewhere else, but why dont we just focus on the smokers for now and I never NOT ONCE said that I was perfect or even close to it...I still havent seen any comments for the POSITIVE side of smoking...I just dont think there is gonna be any.

I suppose I should explain my reasoning behind these thoughts...and YES I HATE smoking and such with a HUGE passion as if you couldnt tell...LOL. By the way, I am the only non-smoker in my immediate family so I was raised around it and have been labeled as a smoker in the past because of the way I smelled (due to the lack of consideration from my parents). My flight instructor looked at me one day, after opening one of my books and said "I didnt know you smoked." He could smell that nasty stench on the pages of my books...I was soooo embarrassed.

First, I think smokers are weak minded because usually (not always) smokers start smoking in school because it is the "cool" thing to do and god forbid that your fellow students think that you are "uncool", caving to peer pressure is a form of being weak minded IMHO. Have you seen the high school kids with the pack of Marlboros hanging out of the tops of their pockets to announce to their peers that they smoke? Did you guys ever notice that in alot of schools the kids that smoked were the social outcasts or "bad" people or troublemakers? This is not always the case of course but it happens alot. Also, weak minded people usually have and need a crutch (nicotine) because they "just cant deal with the stresses of life!!!" Give me a break...geeeze. Do you really go whacko if you dont get your fix?? If so, thats telling you something isnt it? It is just so sad to see people running outside with that cig hanging out of their mouth wayyyy before they even get to the door, lighting it with shaking hands like some fiend and seeing the relief on their faces when they take that first hit....wow, I am at a loss for words here.

Second, stupidity, you have to TRY to smoke. Dont tell me that you took to smoking like a fish to water the first few times you tried it. Didnt it made you cough, gag, made you sick and want to throw up...why do that to yourself??? That, to me is plain stupid. Also, you smokers are all aware of the risks and dangers of smoking and yet you still do it...again IMHO stupid...when I see ANYONE light up, no matter what their education level I automatically think lower of them because of their lack of concern for themselves and others...Dont get me started on the pregnant women who smoke... and people who deliberately smoke around their children who have no choice but to take in that polluted air....stupid!!! These ARE valid points I am sure you will agree.

Third, bad decision makers, knowing the risks of smoking and knowing that smoking is becoming socially taboo and STILL deciding to smoke..bad decision...also, we all know that smoking lowers your SaO2 levels and CAN affect the way you think and make decisions, increasing your risk of making that leathal mistake...when you are around Pts. is smoking a smart decision..I think not. A little aviation story here...did you know that there have been many plane crashes due to Hypoxemia in smoker pilots? Pilots who smoke are more prone to Hypoxemia at 1-2 thousand feet LOWER than pilots who dont smoke...pilots know this and go up anyway...is this good decision making?? Also, everyone knows that MOST drug abusers started out by smoking cigs...this usually leads to pot which leads to stronger, more addictive drugs and bad sexual decisions and so on...dont get me wrong here, I am NOT saying that because you smoke you use illegal drugs.,,but there is a greater potential for it.

You might want to take notice from here on out, if you ever have the chance to work with drug addicts, 9 out of 10 of them are smokers...think about it. Have you ever noticed that alot (not all) of evil TV characters are portrayed as smokers? Weird isnt it?

All in all, it just plain pisses me off that smokers are such inconsiderate people....when walking down the street with one of those coffin nails hanging out of your mouth are you aware of the people behind you that have to endure that smell, I am not talking about being considerate and not blowing smoke in someones face, I am talking about that stream of smoke that drifts off and affects everyone in the area.

It kinda makes me laugh and makes me sad at the same time when I see someone trying to get fit (and I commend them and support them for their efforts) and they have to put their cig down to stretch or they have to light up before they get on the bicycle or go for a jog....what about the people who have emphysema or COPD and are on O2 therapy and still smoke...we ALL know the ones.

Again, I never said I was perfect or even close to it but I can say that my flaws are not nearly as severe or inconsiderate as smoking. If you want to smoke, go for it, but please do it in a considerate manner with the least impact on those around you and the environment...it takes a strong person to quit...are you strong?????

There is alot more where this came from but my fingers are getting tired. I am still not seeing any positives from the smoking populus..anyone care to open my eyes to the positive, healthy side of smoking????

attack the HABIT, not the PEOPLE JIM...

I THINK THAT IS THE POINT!!

no one here EVER said "smoking is a good thing"....

but your messages attack those who smoke---for myriad reasons that may be illegitimate to YOU-----but they do. Don't attack THEM---attack the cigarettes and the addiction. That was the message here.

mmer.

Again, I never, NOT ONCE said I was even close to being perfect but all of my flaws added together are not as bad as smoking. Plus this is a typical "put the blame somewhere else, they are not perfect so why should I be" comment. Be responsible for your actions, put the cig down and step away from the cig....LOL.

Mabe you would have got the correct strength for your "perfect" pill if your decision making skills werent impaired by your state of chronic Hypoxemia from smoking...J/K....LOL.

Still smoking??? Bad decision!!! Bummer ;) ,
