Simmons versus MGH Direct Entry Nursing

Published

Hi. I was accepted to both Simmons and MGH direct entry nursing program and have to choose.

What are the pros and cons of each program?

Thank you.

I've been working as a PCA for over a year, but that is all the healthcare experience I currently have. How about you?

I also plan to work as a CNA or some type of tech during the first summer. I really hope to use the summers as a way to gain a lot of experience in the field!

I used to volunteer at a hospital in High School, but I don't have any clinical experience. Over the summer I work for a biotech company doing research.

Guys,

I don't believe I am all alone out there, but curious to know where other people are at. I am starting NP school in Fall 09. Like most of us, I will need to quit work for schools. Of course, I will need Living expenses + the Tuition + travelling and Books. So, for the 3 years, I calculated that I will owe at least $150,000. Is this insane or what? I wonder what other people owe, will owe. and what good plans do you have for repayment. Upon graduation, I will need a salary of at least $100,000 to break even. Right?

Please share your thoughts on this.....

NPNICO

I was in a similar situation, and the $150K for Simmons Direct-Entry MSN ended up being a dealbreaker for me. I ended up opting for a more "reasonable" $36K for an Accelerated BSN.

(I'm confused--in another message you posted today you seem to be saying that you are starting in May at UMass for their ASBN?)

Hi Tozz,

Just weighing my options for both. When I saw the high tuition for the NP schools, I figured why not applying to the BSN program at UMB, where I was accepted. So, that's where I am at...

Okay, that's what I figured. We are in similar situations, though I'm envious of all your options!

Hi Everyone.. A quick question in regards to the NP programs. Do people mind posting their stats (undergrad degree, gpa) to who got into MGH or Simmons? How much clinical experience did you have?

Also, anyone from the Boston area.. where did you complete your prereqs at? Are you allowed to apply to the program without taking any prereqs and then take them at the summer learning? that part is alittle bit confusing, it doesn't make much sense that they would let people in without seeing grades in biochem or at/phys...

thanks!!

Jackie,

I PM'd you. You can apply without completing your pre-reqs. Both Simmons and MGHIP offer summer programs to complete them.

I think it is best to get as many pre-reqs completed as possible when you apply so the schools have more information to evaluate your potential, especially if don't have a background in science and didn't take any science classes in undergrad.

Help... I am also having trouble deciding between programs. I am trying to decide between Umass Worcester and MGHIP.

UMass worcester is about $30K cheaper with a lower cost of living-although I'll need a car. The program is very small 30 students which may be great. It's only 5 years old so they have only graduated a few classes so they may still be working on the kinks in the program. Umass also require a lot more clinical hours than MGHIP. The actually school is physically connected to a major hospital which has its perks.

MGHIP is more expensive, in Boston with more clinical opportunities. The Institute has been around for decades and the NP program is established and well respected.

Does ranking matter? I've heard conflicting things. Some NPs have told me to go to the less expensive program because it doesn't matter while others have said it does.

Any thoughts?? I have to decide soon.

Jalin 2009 I got your message to my inbox regarding MGH since we are in the same boat! But I am unable to send an email directly back to your address( I am new to this site and a bit I.T. unsavvy!) If you can send me your email address I will answer the questions you asked:) Thanks!

Until you have 15 or more posts you can read but not reply to any pm's that are sent to you. Also remember not to post any email addresses on the forums

How did you figure the $150,000 for tuition at Simmons?
