Simmons College - FNP March cohort

Published

Well this week I start full time online with Simmons. The course work was opened up last week to give students a chance to get started on their assignments, readings, and case studies. I'm in the Cohort 3 (March), and taking 3 classes this term. Advanced Patho, Health Promotion in Nursing, and Nursing Research.

So far for week one there has been quite a bit of reading out of textbooks. The pre-recorded video lectures with power points are really quite awesome if you are an audio/visual learner like myself. Patho has a pre-class quiz, several case studies, and a post class test each week of the term. LOTS of reading! I got a 90% on my pre-class quiz, and my live online class is scheduled for Thursday next week. within 3 days of the live class you have to take your post-class test.

Health promotion seems fairly staight forward, lots of reading (4 chapers in week one alone) but no other assignments due this week, though appears from the syllabus there will be a large health promotion project due towards the latter part of the term. about 1- 1.5 hrs of pre-recorded lecture/video to watch for week one...nothing major.

Nursing Research seems the easiest thus far. 45min pre-recorded lectures, no assignments until about 1/2 way through the term, which will be a large research paper...live class is on Thursday AM for me, not too much in the way of reading. 4 nursing articles but not too long.

So that's my run down of getting started with Simmons this week. I'll try to update more as I've gotten a lot of PM's about the school. I'm just now starting we'll see if I can form coherent thoughts by mid-term =)

Good luck to you TereseRN

Lauris4luv- Me too! Are you going to go part time or full time?

Terese- This is the first week of classes. I'm taking Advanced Pathophysiology (4hrs) and Advanced Research Methods (3hrs). My Patho live class was a solid 2 hours. Between reading, doing the online flipbooks, watching the pre-recorded lectures, and completing the case studies, those took me about 10-12 hours. It will all depend on how much time you want to put in and if you complete all the case studies independently. In the Biology class and Patho class the instructors have split us into groups and that group completes 1 of the case studies. I do them all i dependently first because that's just how I learn best.

I haven't completed everything for my Research class, but I'm guessing it will take me about 3-4 hours outside class this week, but other weeks look much heavier in terms of outside classtime work.

Tasha- how much time did you put in this week for your classes, including Health Promotion?

Hello everyone. I am in the process of applying to simmons. How will I know if I have to take the Biology bridge course? I am working on my SOP today. Do you know if it should be in APA format?

Milobri- the Biology course wasn't incredibly time consuming. It's a 2 credit hour course. I put in about 5 hours a week on it outside class. The most time consuming thing is the case studies, but I did all of them independently. There is a post-class exam due within 72 hours after completing the live class each week, so 8 exams.

sinopa27- I did do my SOP in APA format out of comfort, however I do not know if that is required or not. I don't recall reading that it is. Thanks for the info PNW_NPstudent. What part if the PNW are you from, if you don't mind me asking? I now- with no regard to my better judgement- have my hopes up to hear soon, since some of the other posters heard within several days of application submission. :cautious:

How long was your SOP? Thanks for the support ya'll, I really do appreciate it and I hope I get accepted! Tasha I live in VA definitely further than 2 hours:) So for this biology course, could they do a payment plan? I'm sure that many students can not afford $2000 up front and would prefer to not take out a loan. I can see how this is going to get expensive. Between buying a new printer, scanner, laptop, microsoft word and books I can only hope Uncle Sam is generous with the tax return!!:D

Two pages, double spaced :) I honestly hit a writers block. It's difficult to write about yourself..

You can take 10250 per term in Student Loans.

Thank you for the info Tasha

I found out this morning that I got accepted to Simmons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My advisor actually said they really liked my SOP! lol All that silly worrying for nothing! I too have to take the Biology bridge course. I will start my FNP classes in September. I am kind of happy that it worked out like this. I feel like the Bio course will get me ready for being a student again since it has been 6 years! PACNWRN I am sure you will hear back soon. I actually emailed my advisor and then I heard back on my acceptance within an hour. Did you receive an email notifying you that your application went through to the faculty? I know they have to go through your transcripts and application to make sure everything is there before the submit it to faculty. We should all keep in touch through this journey:) Some of us may even be classmates:)
