Simmons College - FNP March cohort

Published

Well this week I start full time online with Simmons. The course work was opened up last week to give students a chance to get started on their assignments, readings, and case studies. I'm in the Cohort 3 (March), and taking 3 classes this term. Advanced Patho, Health Promotion in Nursing, and Nursing Research.

So far for week one there has been quite a bit of reading out of textbooks. The pre-recorded video lectures with power points are really quite awesome if you are an audio/visual learner like myself. Patho has a pre-class quiz, several case studies, and a post class test each week of the term. LOTS of reading! I got a 90% on my pre-class quiz, and my live online class is scheduled for Thursday next week. within 3 days of the live class you have to take your post-class test.

Health promotion seems fairly staight forward, lots of reading (4 chapers in week one alone) but no other assignments due this week, though appears from the syllabus there will be a large health promotion project due towards the latter part of the term. about 1- 1.5 hrs of pre-recorded lecture/video to watch for week one...nothing major.

Nursing Research seems the easiest thus far. 45min pre-recorded lectures, no assignments until about 1/2 way through the term, which will be a large research paper...live class is on Thursday AM for me, not too much in the way of reading. 4 nursing articles but not too long.

So that's my run down of getting started with Simmons this week. I'll try to update more as I've gotten a lot of PM's about the school. I'm just now starting we'll see if I can form coherent thoughts by mid-term =)

Tasha

Have you heard much about the biology course, Tasha? Just wondering what it's like. I didn't know there was no textbook for it. I finished statistics yesterday and scanned my stuff in and emailed it to my admissions rep last night. Should I expect a response in regards to having fulfilled the stats requirement?

Specializes in Home Health, Podiatry, Neurology, Case Mgmt.

Just follow up with them in about a week to make sure they applied it. My Friend is taking bio note, she says the instructor out is great and the work is fairly easy. It's more of a refresher for her, but so far so Good. All materials are online for that course, so no both books! :)

Oh that is good to hear. I'm glad there isn't a book to buy - it's all very expensive. I paid my $650 deposit. I'm assuming I'll receive more emails on what to expect next?

You should get an email with your 2SN login info, and one about the cconnections Simmons Acct within 48hrs of paying deposit. Connections is where you register for classes, billing, fin aid etc...2sn is the online course work/classes)

Very exciting! I can't wait to get started!

Oh that is a drag milobri! That is one thing I would be concerned about if accepted- how to pay! I'm hoping loans will cover most and maybe some scholarships.

Now I'm worried my statement wasn't long enough 

How long was your SOP? Thanks for the support ya'll, I really do appreciate it and I hope I get accepted! Tasha I live in VA definitely further than 2 hours:) So for this biology course, could they do a payment plan? I'm sure that many students can not afford $2000 up front and would prefer to not take out a loan. I can see how this is going to get expensive. Between buying a new printer, scanner, laptop, microsoft word and books I can only hope Uncle Sam is generous with the tax return!!:D

Yes, your $650 deposit is credited to the tuition for the Bio class. I took out a Sallie Mae student loan for $1700 to pay for the rest. Talk with the Nursing@Simmons financial aid guy. He is great about answering questions completely and quickly. PM me for his name. I forgot we can't post names on here.

Terese, I'm in cohort 3, same as Tasha. She's FT, I'm PT.

Bio was a good refresher for me. I graduated in 2005 and no biology since prereqs over 10 years ago. I was a bit miffed about it at first too, but knew I had to suck it up. I got back into the swing of things and get the concepts and the way the course designer tests.

While no book is required, you will have to do some independent searching for answers to the case study questions. Internet, or other nursing books you may have available.

That'a great! You'll have to keep us all posted on how it is going. Based off of what you have seen thus far, how many hours a week do you think you will have to put in? I keep thinking 30 hours. Does that sound about right?

PNW NPstudent - I sent you a PM re: financial aid. Did you find the biology course difficult or time consuming? How many tests are there? Thanks for all your help. I sure appreciate it!

I applied and got an acceptance email 2 days later. I am in the May cohort but because I have to take the biology bridge course, wont start the actually grad classes till Sept 15 I believe. Can't wait to get this going
